Athletics Kenya has named a powerful 58-member team for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, scheduled to run from September 13 to 21 at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo. The lineup reflects a mix of established champions and emerging stars, signalling Kenya’s determination to extend its dominance in track and field on the world stage.

Star Athletes Leading the Charge

Faith Kipyegon, a double Olympic and world champion, headlines the squad and is set to compete in both the 1,500m and 5,000m. She will be joined by Beatrice Chebet, who will contest the 5,000m and 10,000m, while Olympic marathon gold medalist Peres Jepchirchir takes charge of the marathon team.

In the men’s 800m, teenage sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi leads the charge alongside Nicholas Kebenei and Kelvin Loti. Sprint specialist Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s fastest man, will run the 100m and also anchor Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team, showcasing the country’s growing strength in short-distance events. Veteran thrower Julius Yego, a former world javelin champion, returns to add firepower and experience in the field events.

Rising Talents – New Faces Representing Kenya

The middle- and long-distance events are stacked with familiar names and exciting newcomers. Timothy Cheruiyot, Reynold Cheruiyot, and Phanuel Koech will represent Kenya in the men’s 1,500m, while Edmund Serem and Abraham Kibiwott front the steeplechase squad. Edwin Kurgat, Ishmael Kipkurui, and Benson Kiplangat will line up in the 10,000m, with marathon veterans Vincent Kipkemoi, Dickson Chumba, and Kennedy Kimutai handling the road events.

On the women’s side, world U20 champion Faith Cherotich joins Doris Lemongole and Pamela Kosgei in the 3,000m steeplechase, bringing youthful energy to the team. Mary Moraa, the reigning 800m world champion, heads a strong lineup that also includes Vivian Chebet and Sarah Moraa.

Kenya’s relay squads will also be in the spotlight. The men’s 4x400m team features Boniface Mweresa, Kelvin Kiprotich, and David Sanayek, while Mercy Chebet and Esther Mbagari lead the women’s 4x400m side. These entries highlight Kenya’s ambition to extend its success beyond traditional distance races.

Kenya Showcases a Global Dominance

The squad reflects Athletics Kenya’s strategy of combining proven champions with fresh talent. Newcomers such as Faith Cherotich, Phanuel Koech, and Edmund Serem will be making their senior World Championships debuts, competing alongside household names like Kipyegon, Chebet, Moraa, and Yego. This balance ensures the team remains competitive now while also preparing for the future.

With representatives across sprints, middle and long distances, steeplechase, relays, marathons, and field events, Kenya is sending a versatile and balanced delegation to Tokyo. The 58-strong squad is a statement of intent: Kenya is ready to defend its status as one of the most formidable forces in global athletics
