Faith Kipyegon Wins Gold in Tokyo

Faith Kipyegon has cemented her place as the greatest 1,500m runner in history after capturing her fourth world title, and third consecutive, at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Arriving in the Japanese capital as the overwhelming favorite, the three-time Olympic champion once again rose to the occasion at the National Stadium on Tuesday. She crossed the finish line in 3:52.15 to strike gold ahead of fellow Kenyan Dorcas Ewoi, who stunned the field to take silver in 3:54.92. Australia’s Jessica Hull claimed bronze in 3:55.16, marking her nation’s first medal over the distance.

Kenyan Icon Dominates in Tokyo

At 31 years old, Kipyegon wasted no time asserting her authority on the track. From the opening lap, she set the pace and kept her challengers at bay. When the bell rang for the final lap, she surged forward, unleashing a trademark burst of speed in the last 300m that left her opponents chasing shadows.

Behind her, the real drama unfolded as Hull, who had been tipped for silver, found herself overtaken by the younger Ewoi, who powered past in the closing meters. While Hull fought off Nelly Chepchirchir to cling onto bronze, the silver belonged to Kenya.

Kipyegon’s Unmatched Legacy

Kipyegon’s victory adds to her remarkable collection of titles: world gold medals in 2017, 2022, 2023, and now 2025. Her only blemish came in 2019, when she earned silver shortly after returning from maternity leave. Combined with Olympic triumphs in 2016, 2021, and 2024, plus five Diamond League crowns, her dominance over the 1,500m is without question.

Her win also contributed to Kenya’s growing medal tally in Tokyo. Beatrice Chebet kicked things off with gold in the 10,000m on day one, followed by Peres Jepchirchir’s marathon victory. Ewoi’s silver marked Kenya’s first of the championship, while Edmund Serem had earlier bagged bronze in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.
