Beatrice Chebet has revealed the special significance behind Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s gold medal victory and why it became such a powerful highlight of Kenya’s World Athletics Championships campaign.
Chebet, who had a stellar outing herself after clinching double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m races, described Wanyonyi’s triumph in the men’s 800m as an emotional and unifying moment.
At this year’s championship, Kenyan women largely carried the nation’s hopes. Faith Kipyegon once again proved her dominance by securing her fourth world title in the 1500m before taking silver in the 5000m. Lilian Odira delivered an impressive victory in the 800m, Faith Cherotich topped the 3000m steeplechase, and Peres Jepchirchir claimed marathon gold. Dorcus Ewoi added to the tally with silver in the women’s 1500m.
In contrast, the men struggled to reach the podium’s top step. Reynold Cheruiyot and Edmund Serem only managed bronze in the men’s 1500m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively, leaving the pressure on Wanyonyi to rescue Kenya’s male athletes from finishing without a gold.
Why Chebet Believes Wanyonyi’s Win Stood Out
Upon returning home from Tokyo, Chebet explained that the women had set the standard and that everyone looked to Wanyonyi to ensure the men did not leave empty-handed. She admitted the entire team was rallying behind him during his final.
Wanyonyi did not disappoint, storming to victory with a world-class time of 1:41.44. Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati followed closely in 1:41.90, while Marco Arop of Canada finished third in 1:41.95.
“We are so grateful to have written history by sweeping gold medals from the 800m to the marathon,” Chebet said. “As women, we showed we can achieve anything without limits. But the 800m gold from Wanyonyi was the one we were waiting for the men’s golden moment. We all felt like we were running alongside him, and we couldn’t be happier.”
Kenya ultimately finished the championships with 11 medals, seven gold, three silver, and one bronze, securing second place in the medal standings behind the United States, which claimed the overall top spot.
