Sunderland climbed to second place in the Premier League after pulling off a stunning 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, sealed by a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Chemsdine Talbi.
It was a dream ending for Sunderland fans, as Talbi latched onto a clever pass from substitute Brian Brobbey and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner in the 93rd minute. The Sunderland bench erupted in celebration as players sprinted toward the away supporters to share in the moment of pure elation.
The rest of Stamford Bridge was left silent. Chelsea entered the match on a four-game winning streak and seemed in control early when Alejandro Garnacho netted his first goal for the club after just four minutes. However, Sunderland hit back when Wilson Isidor poked home an equalizer after a long throw from Nordi Mukiele caused confusion in the Chelsea penalty area. From that moment, the visitors frustrated the hosts with disciplined defending and relentless energy.
Garnacho came close to restoring Chelsea’s lead twice in the first half, hitting the side-netting on both occasions, while Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs denied him again from a tight angle. After halftime, substitute Estevao’s deflected effort was as close as Chelsea came to scoring. The London side appeared short of ideas and energy, eventually slipping to seventh in the table.
Despite their dominant display against 10-man Ajax in midweek, where their young side scored five goals in the Champions League, Chelsea couldn’t find a way through Sunderland’s compact defense. Talbi’s last-gasp finish delivered a priceless moment for the visitors, who continue to enjoy their return to Premier League prominence.
Chelsea Struggle Without a True Striker
Teenage forward Marc Guiu, one of Chelsea’s Champions League heroes earlier in the week, was handed his first Premier League start against the very team he briefly joined on loan earlier this season. However, the youngster found it tough going against Sunderland’s physical defenders.
With Liam Delap nearing a comeback from injury, his return cannot come soon enough. Chelsea clearly lack a focal point in attack, and Delap’s presence could provide the spark they desperately need. The absence of injured playmaker Cole Palmer also limited Chelsea’s creativity, leaving them unable to break down Sunderland’s organized back line.
The statistics told the story, Chelsea registered an Expected Goals (xG) of 0.97 compared to Sunderland’s 1.16, despite controlling 69% of possession. Guiu was dominated by Dan Ballard, struggling to hold up play or make himself available for passes. He was substituted after 76 minutes, having touched the ball only ten times.
Joao Pedro moved up front, with Estevao shifting into the No. 10 role, but Chelsea continued to lack attacking threat. It was another reminder of the questionable decision to let Nicolas Jackson leave during the summer window.
Manager Enzo Maresca’s caution earlier in the season about overhyping his team now seems justified. This defeat showed that Chelsea still has plenty of work to do.
