Jonah Ayunga Reflects on Frustrating Equatorial Guinea Loss and Lessons Ahead of Harambee Stars Clash with Senegal

The St. Mirren winger has offered insight into the key takeaways from Harambee Stars’ narrow defeat to Equatorial Guinea as the team prepares for their upcoming showdown with Senegal.

Jonah Ayunga spoke openly about the challenges Harambee Stars faced in their 1-0 friendly loss to Equatorial Guinea on Friday, November 14, at the Emir Complex Stadium in Antalya, Turkey. Kenya started brightly, dominating the first quarter of an hour and threatening the opposition on several occasions. However, the game shifted just before the break when the referee awarded a penalty after Josete Miranda was fouled in the box. The 27-year-old forward stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way, putting Equatorial Guinea ahead.

Harambee Stars continued to push forward and had multiple chances to pull level. Ayunga came close early on, forcing a save in the 13th minute, and Kenya even had the ball in the back of the net in the 18th minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Despite maintaining pressure, the Kenyan attack struggled to find a way through a disciplined Equatorial Guinea defence.

Ayunga expressed his frustration after the match, particularly regarding the decisive penalty. He admitted he was unsure whether the call was correct, as he had not reviewed the footage, but felt it looked like a borderline decision in real time.

The winger noted that apart from the penalty, Harambee Stars had defended well and kept their opponents quiet. He highlighted that Equatorial Guinea created very little from open play, giving the team confidence that their defensive structure held up for most of the match.

Ayunga also took responsibility for his missed chances, acknowledging that converting even one could have changed the outcome. He stressed the importance of being sharper in the final third, saying the team cannot afford to waste opportunities, especially in matches where chances are limited.

“I’m frustrated with the result. Losing 1-0 to a penalty is tough. I’m not even sure if it was the right call because we haven’t seen it back. It looked 50/50 in the moment,” Ayunga said.

“I think as a team we were solid defensively. They had a couple of attempts, but aside from the penalty, there wasn’t much they created.”

Looking ahead to their meeting with Senegal, Ayunga said the first half against Equatorial Guinea showed what the team is capable of when they stick to their plan. He explained that staying compact, defending as a unit, and breaking quickly on transition created several promising moments, but the finishing touch was missing.

Ayunga added that the attacking players must step up and convert the chances they work so hard to create.

“For us, especially in the first half, we needed to take our chances. We had good opportunities, but the final touch just wasn’t right,” he said.

“We created a lot, and our plan, which was to sit deep and break quickly,worked well. Now it’s on us forwards and midfielders to turn those chances into goals.”

Harambee Stars will look to bounce back when they meet Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Tuesday, November 18, at 18:00 at the Mardan Stadium.
