As construction progresses on what will be East Africa’s largest sports facility, Architect Maj. Victor King’e confirmed that the stadium will not feature a retractable roof. This decision was guided by practicality and Kenya’s favorable climate. King’e noted that the design prioritizes spectator comfort while taking advantage of the region’s mild weather.
Contrary to public speculation, the stadium will have a fixed roof canopy covering only the seating areas, leaving the playing field exposed.
Talanta Stadium to Mirror Kasarani’s Structure
“The canopy will cover only the spectator areas, similar to the approach used at Kasarani Stadium,” King’e told Viral Tea. He added that a retractable roof, often used to protect against extreme weather, is unnecessary in Kenya. “There’s no need to temperature-control the entire stadium,” he explained. “What matters most is providing shelter for fans during matches, while keeping the pitch open allows for natural ventilation and sunlight.”
Globally, stadiums like London’s Wembley and Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu use retractable roofs to shield players and fans from heavy rain, snow, or sun. In Madrid, the closed roof also amplifies crowd noise, enhancing the home-team advantage during major football fixtures. While retractable roofs can also preserve pitch quality, Talanta Stadium will rely on a durable hybrid pitch. This surface combines natural Bermuda grass with synthetic fibers, making it suitable for football, rugby, and other events.
The stadium complex is designed for multi-sport use. A separate 2,000-seat mini-stadium will feature an eight-lane running track, while the main arena will focus solely on football and rugby. Two additional training grounds are also included. Architecturally, the stadium will introduce a roof canopy supported by hydraulically tensioned steel cables, a first for the region.
Accessibility is a key focus, with road expansions along Ngong Road and plans for a dedicated match-day commuter train service. Inside, 15 elevators will ease movement throughout the facility.
Talanta Stadium will meet international standards for major events. It will house seven changing rooms, VIP lounges, modern locker rooms, advanced media centers with dedicated entry points, and conference facilities. Additionally, the stadium will feature VAR booths and goal-line technology, ensuring smooth broadcast operations and accurate officiating.
