A former Harambee Stars coach has opened up about how Kenyan football legend Dennis Oliech came agonizingly close to sealing a move to English giants Manchester United, only for the deal to collapse because of a critical factor beyond his on-field ability.
Dennis Oliech remains one of the finest strikers Kenya has ever produced, and at the peak of his career, he was attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in world football. His pace, power and fearlessness in front of goal made him a standout talent, and for a brief moment, a move to Old Trafford was a real possibility.
Oliech went on to enjoy a successful career abroad, featuring prominently in Qatar and France, while also cementing his place as Kenya’s joint second-highest goalscorer of all time. The former Mathare United forward left Kenya in 2003 to join Al Arabi of Qatar, where he spent two seasons before making the switch to French football. His European journey saw him play for Nantes, followed by a memorable five-year spell at Auxerre, before rounding off his time in France with Ajaccio between 2013 and 2015.
At the time of his move to Al Arabi, Oliech was regarded as one of the brightest young attacking prospects in the game. In 2004, he was listed among the world’s most promising players, sharing that spotlight with future Premier League icons such as Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. It was during this period that Manchester United reportedly began serious efforts to assess his suitability for a transfer.
How Man United Tracked Oliech
Former Harambee Stars head coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has revealed that United closely monitored Oliech during the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. Mulee, who guided Kenya to qualification for the tournament, explained that the English club sent representatives specifically to evaluate the striker.
“In 2004, Dennis was among the top 10 strikers in the world,” Mulee said while speaking on a podcast hosted by comedian and radio personality Dr Ofweneke.
According to Mulee, Manchester United dispatched two officials to Tunisia. One focused entirely on analysing Oliech’s footballing qualities, while the other conducted psychometric assessments designed to evaluate the player’s mental strength, personality and overall suitability for life at a top European club.
“Manchester sent a scout to Tunisia when I was the coach,” Mulee recalled. “One came to watch him play, and another young man was responsible for asking psychometric questions.”
The football scout was reportedly impressed by Oliech’s raw talent, work rate and attacking instincts. However, it was the results of the psychological evaluation that ultimately raised concerns.
Mulee in Awe of the Striker’s Ability
After the tests, Mulee says he was informed that although Oliech was an exceptional footballer, the psychometric results left United with doubts.
“It’s not only about talent,” Mulee explained. “Big clubs want to understand your mindset, your character and whether you can fit into their environment. I don’t know exactly what came out of the test, but it was enough to stop the move.”
Despite the failed transfer, Mulee remains convinced that Oliech would have thrived at Old Trafford had the opportunity materialised.
“You could put him on the pitch and be sure something would happen,” he said.
Following his time in France, Oliech had a short stint with Dubai CSC before returning home to Kenya, where he played for Gor Mahia in 2019. He earned 76 caps for Harambee Stars and scored 34 goals, placing him just one behind Kenya’s all-time leading scorer Michael Ouma.
