Jean-Philippe Mateta: Crystal Palace Striker Open to New Challenge Amid Premier League Interest

Crystal Palace could be facing further upheaval this month, with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta open to taking on a new challenge away from Selhurst Park. The Eagles are already preparing for the departure of club captain Marc Guehi, and there is now a growing possibility that Mateta could follow him out of the door.

Palace have endured a turbulent period, with significant changes expected both on and off the pitch. Guehi is edging closer to a move to Manchester City, while head coach Oliver Glasner has also confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season. Against that backdrop, uncertainty is growing around the future of Mateta, who has been one of Palace’s most important attacking players.

The France international is understood to be keen on testing himself at a higher level. At 28, Mateta believes the time is right to pursue a move to a club competing in the UEFA Champions League, or at least one with a strong chance of qualifying for the competition next season. His form in the Premier League has not gone unnoticed, with Juventus and several English top-flight sides monitoring his situation closely.

Despite attracting interest from abroad, Mateta is selective about his next destination. The former Mainz striker is not considering a move to Saudi Arabia or Turkey at this stage of his career, as his focus remains firmly on playing at the highest level in Europe. With 18 months left on his current contract, Crystal Palace may see this transfer window as an opportunity to cash in.

Glasner addressed the situation on Friday, acknowledging that a sale could happen if the club’s valuation is met. The Austrian coach explained that Palace would be open to negotiations under the right circumstances, particularly given the remaining length of Mateta’s deal. However, he also made it clear that if no suitable offer arrives, the striker will remain at the club.

Mateta’s desire for a move is also linked to his international ambitions. With the World Cup approaching this summer, the striker is eager to put himself in the best possible position to earn a place in France’s squad. Regular football at a club competing on the European stage could significantly enhance his chances of catching the national team selectors’ attention.

Guehi and Glasner Set to Depart

News of Mateta’s openness to a move emerged shortly after confirmation of major exits at Crystal Palace. Marc Guehi is closing in on a transfer to Manchester City, with an initial fee of £20 million agreed and a sell-on clause included in the deal. Discussions are ongoing regarding the finer details, but the transfer is believed to be at an advanced stage.

Glasner confirmed that Guehi is in the final phases of completing his move and will not feature in Palace’s upcoming fixture against Sunderland. Like Mateta, the Palace boss is also seeking a fresh challenge and will step down at the end of the season.

The Austrian coach revealed that he informed club chairman Steve Parish back in October of his intention not to renew his contract. He chose to keep the decision private due to the club’s demanding schedule and only shared the news with his players on Friday, ahead of their trip to the Stadium of Light.
