Interest from elsewhere in Europe began to grow, with Napoli among the clubs monitoring his situation. There were also reports suggesting that the England international was open to the idea of a loan move in January in order to gain regular minutes.

However, United were clear in their stance that they would not sanction a temporary exit. Club sources maintained that Mainoo remained a long-term asset and an important part of the club’s future, regardless of his reduced role earlier in the campaign.

That belief has been reinforced following a change in the dugout. New head coach Michael Carrick wasted no time in showing his faith in the young midfielder, handing Mainoo a starting role at the first opportunity. After initially falling out of favour under Amorim, he worked his way back into the team and was praised for his professionalism and determination. He remained an important figure over the past year and even started Carrick’s first match in charge, underlining his continued value on the pitch.
