Manchester United continued their Premier League resurgence with a huge 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford, where Matheus Cunha bagged his first goal for the club in a high-tempo and slightly controversial encounter.
Ruben Amorim’s team, once struggling for consistency, now appears to have turned a corner. After a shaky start to the campaign, United have pieced together three straight league wins, pushing them at least temporarily back into the top-four conversation.
The Red Devils came into the match with a poor record against Brighton, having lost six of their previous seven league meetings. Early on, it looked like the visitors might again be their nemesis, with former United striker Danny Welbeck missing several clear chances. Those squandered opportunities allowed the hosts to seize control as Cunha and Casemiro struck within ten minutes. Cunha’s opener was pure class, while Casemiro’s deflected effort carried a fair bit of luck.
Bruno Fernandes missed a golden opportunity to make it three before Brighton hit back through Bryan Mbeumo, who drilled a precise shot between Lewis Dunk’s legs. However, the goal came amid protests over what appeared to be a foul by Luke Shaw on Georginio Rutter in the buildup, a decision that added to the growing list of officiating controversies on the night.
Referee Anthony Taylor and VAR came under scrutiny once again when Amad Diallo was denied a penalty despite clear contact from Maxim De Cuyper, with officials ruling the defender had touched the ball first. Later, Patrick Dorgu escaped with only a yellow card after bringing down Yankuba Minteh, though replays suggested the forward may have already lost control before the foul.
The intensity didn’t let up. Welbeck eventually found the net with a perfectly placed free-kick that ended Senne Lammens’ hopes of back-to-back clean sheets. Substitute Charalampos Kostoulas then reduced the deficit, setting up a nervy finale that threatened to unravel United’s progress.
But Mbeumo had other plans. Deep into stoppage time, he fired in a fourth to seal all three points and restore calm around Old Trafford. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville described it as Amorim’s “best and most defining week” since taking charge, a sentiment that resonated with fans celebrating another step forward.
Cunha and Mbeumo Partnership Sparks New Hope
Manchester United managed to secure a convincing win while somehow looking like they’d survived a scare, something that has almost become their trademark. Against Brighton, a fixture that rarely lacks drama, the pattern repeated itself.
At 2-0 up, Old Trafford was electric, the crowd finally sensing momentum. Yet the second half revealed familiar vulnerabilities. For all their brilliance, Amorim’s men still find ways to invite pressure. It’s almost an art form, dominating and doubting themselves at the same time.
Still, when Mbeumo smashed home his stoppage-time strike, any lingering anxiety dissolved. United created four clear chances, missed three, and somehow scored four goals—an illustration of both their progress and unpredictability.
Amorim recently praised this squad for having players who “fit the style,” and the Cunha-Mbeumo connection perfectly embodies that vision. Their blend of movement, pace, and composure has given United a fresh attacking identity.
Without their influence, this might still be a side struggling for direction. With them, however, Manchester United look like a team rediscovering who they are.
