Arsenal Their Own Worst Enemy as Michael Carrick’s Dream Man Utd Start Continues

Arsenal looked firmly in command of their clash with Manchester United when Lisandro Martinez inadvertently deflected Martin Odegaard’s cross-shot into his own net during the first half. At that point, Mikel Arteta’s side appeared settled and in control. However, when the moment demanded calm and authority, Arsenal instead allowed disorder to creep in and derail their grip on the match.
The equaliser arrived through Bryan Mbeumo, capitalising on a costly mistake from Martin Zubimendi. Crucially, this was not an isolated warning sign. In the eight minutes following Arsenal’s opener, Mbeumo had already slipped behind the defence once before, while Bruno Fernandes had missed a clear opportunity moments earlier. Arsenal cannot claim they were caught off guard; the danger signs were there well before United struck back.
From that moment, Arsenal’s composure evaporated. The remainder of the contest saw them scrambling, unable to regain control, with their nervousness reflected in the atmosphere around the Emirates Stadium. Despite sitting at the summit of the Premier League table, it does not feel like a team brimming with confidence, nor a crowd fully convinced of what lies ahead.
Patrick Vieira raised concerns about Arsenal’s mentality after the match, but perhaps the most stinging criticism came from former Manchester United captain Roy Keane. “They need to return to the basics and face this challenge head-on instead of fearing it,” Keane said. His words struck a chord with a side that appears haunted by how previous title bids have unravelled.
Those experiences seem to be weighing heavily on the players. Recent goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were not catastrophic results, but together they hint at an underlying fragility. This match reinforced those fears. It was the first time Arsenal had conceded three goals in a single game since December 2023, and once again, they were largely responsible for their own downfall.
A worrying pattern is emerging. Arsenal continue to complicate situations that should be straightforward, inviting pressure when control is within reach. They still boast a four-point lead at the top, but both team and supporters are struggling to escape the psychological baggage of seasons past.
Carrick’s Dream Man Utd Start Can Keep Getting Better
Manchester City beaten — check. Arsenal beaten — check. Michael Carrick could hardly have scripted a more impressive beginning to his tenure as Manchester United head coach, and the signs suggest there may be more to come.
Carrick has revitalised United by freeing their attacking players from Ruben Amorim’s rigid 3-4-3 system and reintroducing a style that reflects the club’s traditional identity — pace out wide and an emphasis on forward-thinking football. That approach has paid dividends against two of the Premier League’s strongest sides.
His bravery was underlined late on at the Emirates. With United leading 2-1 and Patrick Dorgu injured, Carrick opted to introduce Benjamin Sesko rather than the safer choice of Mason Mount, who could have provided additional defensive cover against Bukayo Saka. Sesko was deployed centrally, allowing Matheus Cunha to move left, a switch that proved decisive.
Cunha’s freedom to drift into space ultimately led to the winning goal, which he finished with a composed, curling effort. Carrick played down expectations afterwards, insisting United are not getting carried away. Yet that did little to dampen the mood among supporters, some of whom left singing about a potential title charge.
While a genuine title push remains unlikely, United’s position inside the top four is encouraging. A Champions League return is a realistic ambition, especially with a favourable run of fixtures ahead against Fulham, Tottenham, West Ham, Everton and Crystal Palace.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once went 11 games unbeaten when he took interim charge in 2019, a run that secured him a long-term deal. With 15 matches still to play, Carrick now has a genuine opportunity to build a compelling case for extending his own stay in the Old Trafford dugout.
