Arsenal Stretch Premier League Lead as Chelsea, Liverpool Stage Comebacks

Share this:

Arsenal eased growing concerns over a late-season wobble in their bid for a first Premier League title in 22 years by producing a dominant 4-0 victory away to Leeds on Saturday. Elsewhere, Chelsea and Liverpool both showed resilience, staging impressive comebacks to claim vital wins that reshaped the top end of the table.

The emphatic win at Elland Road allowed the Gunners to extend their advantage at the summit to seven points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta’s side responded in style after a difficult spell that had seen them collect just two points from their previous three league outings, including a shock home defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Having finished second in the league for three consecutive seasons, doubts had begun to surface about Arsenal’s mentality and whether they possessed the composure needed to finally go one step further. Those questions grew louder when Bukayo Saka was ruled out after picking up an injury during the warm-up.

However, his replacement, Noni Madueke, stepped up impressively and played a central role in dismantling Leeds. Arsenal took control early, with Madueke delivering a precise cross that Martin Zubimendi headed home to give the visitors a deserved lead.

The pressure continued to mount, and Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow endured a miserable afternoon. He could only push another dangerous Madueke delivery into his own net shortly before half-time, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb.

Despite Leeds’ solid recent form, the defeat leaves them just six points above the relegation zone. Their first home loss since November was confirmed midway through the second half when Viktor Gyokeres, who has faced criticism in recent weeks, powered in his 11th goal since his move from Sporting Lisbon after meeting a cross from Gabriel Martinelli.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus added further gloss to the scoreline with a thunderous strike four minutes from time, underlining Arsenal’s attacking depth. Arteta praised his team’s response after the final whistle, calling it a performance that demonstrated both quality and character given the challenging circumstances.

Arsenal will now look to their north London rivals Tottenham for assistance when Manchester City travel to face them, while Aston Villa welcome Brentford on Sunday as the title race continues to unfold.

Rosenior inspires Chelsea comeback

Chelsea’s encouraging run under new head coach Liam Rosenior continued, though not without drama, as they climbed into the top four following a dramatic 3-2 victory over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were second-best for much of the opening half and were deservedly trailing at the break after goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville stunned the home crowd. Chelsea supporters voiced their frustration by booing their team off at half-time, while West Ham sensed a crucial opportunity in their fight to avoid relegation.

A third straight league win would have moved Nuno Espirito Santo’s side within two points of safety, but Chelsea emerged a different team after the interval. Rosenior made a bold triple substitution at the break, a move that transformed the tempo and intensity of the match.

Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella, both introduced at half-time, made immediate impacts by scoring to restore parity. West Ham struggled to cope with the sustained pressure, and their resistance finally crumbled in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez swept home the winning goal.

Rosenior hailed his squad’s response, suggesting the second-half turnaround highlighted the potential within the group when used effectively.

Liverpool rally at Anfield

Liverpool also showed their fighting spirit as they came from behind to secure a convincing 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield, a result that lifted them into fifth place.

The visitors had started brightly and were rewarded when Anthony Gordon fired Newcastle into a deserved lead, momentarily silencing the home supporters. However, Liverpool’s summer signings began to justify their hefty price tags in a decisive spell before half-time.

Hugo Ekitike struck twice in quick succession, with the opener brilliantly created by Florian Wirtz, swinging momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour and easing pressure on manager Arne Slot. After the break, a tiring Newcastle side was overwhelmed as Mohamed Salah provided the assist for Wirtz to score his sixth goal in 10 appearances.

Ibrahima Konate completed the scoring with Liverpool’s fourth, breaking down in tears after netting in his first match since the passing of his father, an emotional moment that resonated around the stadium.

Elsewhere, Everton salvaged a 1-1 draw at Brighton thanks to Beto’s dramatic 97th-minute equaliser, a result that offered little encouragement to either side’s hopes of qualifying for Europe. Bournemouth, meanwhile, eased lingering relegation fears with a comfortable 2-0 win away at bottom-placed Wolves, courtesy of goals from Eli Kroupi and Alex Scott.
