Manchester City brought an end to a frustrating four-match winless run in the Premier League with a controlled 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, a result that moves Pep Guardiola’s side to within four points of leaders Arsenal. Antoine Semenyo marked the occasion by scoring his first league goal for City, while Omar Marmoush also found the net to set the champions on their way.
After a difficult week that included successive defeats across competitions, Guardiola made several notable changes, leaving both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden on the bench. The adjustments paid off, as City delivered their first league win of 2026 to steady their title challenge.
Marmoush, tasked with leading the line in Haaland’s absence, wasted little time making an impact. The Egyptian forward struck early to give City the lead and later came close to adding a second as the hosts dominated long stretches of the contest. Semenyo then doubled the advantage just before the break, ensuring City went into half-time firmly in control.
Wolves, rooted to the bottom of the table, showed more intent after the interval but were unable to find a way past City’s defence. The visitors remain 14 points adrift of safety, while City stay second as the title race continues to take shape.
How the match unfolded
City made the perfect start, taking the lead inside six minutes. Matheus Nunes delivered a teasing cross from the right, and Marmoush stretched to divert the ball past Jose Sa from close range. It was a moment that immediately settled the hosts and underlined their intent after recent setbacks.
The early goal allowed City to dictate the tempo, circulating the ball confidently and pinning Wolves deep in their own half. Marmoush nearly doubled the advantage midway through the first half, cutting in from the left before seeing his effort strike the base of the right-hand post.
There was a brief moment of controversy when City appealed for a penalty after the ball appeared to strike Yerson Mosquera’s arm in the box. However, following a VAR review, the referee ruled that the defender’s arm was in a natural position, and play continued.
City’s pressure eventually told again in first-half stoppage time. Semenyo, who had already been denied by Sa earlier in the half, picked up the ball on the edge of the area and curled a precise low shot into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-0.
Wolves showed more fight after the restart. Joao Gomes sent a free-kick onto the roof of the net, while substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen glanced a header wide, though he may have been offside. Both sides came close late on, with Semenyo rattling the woodwork once more and Mosquera hitting the crossbar with a looping header at the other end.
Man City end a testing week on a high
This match arrived at a crucial moment for City. A derby defeat to Manchester United had dented their league momentum, while a disappointing Champions League result against Bodo/Glimt added to the pressure.
Guardiola responded by rotating his squad, with Haaland only introduced in the 74th minute once the result was largely secure. Marmoush took full advantage of his opportunity, scoring within minutes on his first league start since August and registering his first Premier League goal since May 2025.
Semenyo also continued his encouraging form following his move from AFC Bournemouth. His goal capped a lively display, though he might have added to his tally earlier when he fired straight at Sa after meeting a sweeping cross-field pass from debutant Marc Guehi.
City were less dominant after the break, controlling possession without consistently stretching Wolves. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma looked slightly uneasy when dealing with crosses, but the defensive unit stood firm under late pressure. That resilience will be a welcome sign for Guardiola ahead of a demanding schedule.
City now turn their attention to a vital Champions League clash at home to Galatasaray in midweek, before a tricky league trip to Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.
Wolves’ positive run halted
Despite their league position, Wolves had shown signs of revival in recent weeks, going four games unbeaten and finally securing a first win of the season. That run had lifted the mood around Molineux, even if survival still appears a daunting task.
Manager Rob Edwards set his side up with a back five, content to absorb pressure and limit space in dangerous areas. Even after conceding early, Wolves largely stuck to the plan, with much of the game played in front of their defensive line.
They created a couple of half-chances before the interval but failed to seriously test Donnarumma. Edwards made a double change at half-time, including the introduction of Strand Larsen, which gave Wolves a clearer focal point in attack.
The visitors enjoyed their best spell midway through the second half, winning several set-pieces and forcing City to defend deeper than usual. However, a lack of composure in the final third prevented them from turning pressure into goals.
In the end, Wolves could not find the breakthrough that might have made for a tense finish. Edwards will now be looking for a response when his side return home to face Bournemouth, as they continue their fight to climb away from the foot of the table.
