Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback win over Newcastle United on Monday night was not short of drama, both on and off the pitch. The match, decided by late goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes after Nick Woltemade’s opener, was overshadowed by heated debates around refereeing calls that left both players and managers demanding answers. Following the controversy, the Premier League has publicly confirmed its stance on two crucial incidents that fueled debate during the match.
The Penalty That Wasn’t
One of the main flashpoints came in the first half when referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot after Viktor Gyokeres appeared to be brought down by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope. Arsenal players quickly surrounded the official, confident they had earned a penalty. However, after a VAR review led by Darren England, the decision was reversed.
The Premier League Match Centre later explained the ruling in a statement shared on X: “After review, the Newcastle goalkeeper plays the ball and there is no foul. The final decision is drop ball.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated, insisting that the incident met the standard for a penalty. “I watched it live and then again on the screen, and for me it was a penalty,” he said during his post-match press conference. He further added that officials had been instructed not to intervene unless a mistake was “clear and obvious,” which he felt did not apply in this situation.
Despite his disagreement, Arteta praised his players for keeping their composure. “The team stayed emotionally calm and composed, and that’s a big lesson we’ve learned from the past,” he added.
Late Handball Decision Sparks More Debate
The second controversial moment came just minutes before Arsenal’s dramatic turnaround. Newcastle players appealed strongly for a penalty when the ball struck Gabriel Magalhaes’s arm inside the box. The defender’s arm was positioned away from his body, but VAR concluded that the ball had first deflected off his shin before making contact with his arm.
Explaining the decision, the Premier League noted: “The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR, with the ball deemed to have deflected off Gabriel’s shin and onto his arm.”
While many Newcastle fans voiced their frustration, the league’s confirmation showed clear backing for the match officials.
Upcoming Assignments for Officials
Despite the backlash, both Jarred Gillett and Darren England continue to hold the confidence of the Premier League. According to the league’s official appointments list, Gillett will oversee VAR for Leeds United’s clash with Tottenham on Saturday before taking charge of Wolves vs Brighton on Sunday. England, meanwhile, will return to action on Sunday as the referee for Manchester City’s trip to Brentford.
Elsewhere, John Brooks has been named referee for Arsenal’s upcoming game against West Ham United, with Simon Bennett and Mat Wilkes as his assistants and Chris Kavanagh serving as fourth official.
The Premier League’s decision to stand by its referees sends a strong message that, despite the uproar, it considers the controversial calls made at St James’ Park to have been the correct ones.
