Benni McCarthy has spoken out against Jose Mourinho’s recent remarks about Vinicius Junior, describing them as inappropriate while also urging the Portuguese manager to reflect and publicly clarify his position.
The Harambee Stars head coach expressed disappointment over Mourinho’s post-match comments following the heated Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid. McCarthy, who enjoyed a successful spell at FC Porto and later became a fan favourite in England with Blackburn Rovers and West Ham, shared his views in an interview with the BBC.
Mourinho had suggested that Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior should have celebrated his goal in a more measured manner instead of appearing to provoke opposition supporters. According to Mourinho, celebrations should remain respectful rather than inciting a hostile reaction from tens of thousands in the stadium.
“When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way… and not pick a fight with 60,000 spectators,” Mourinho reportedly said in reference to the Brazilian winger. He further defended Benfica by stating that the club could not be associated with racism, pointing out that one of its greatest icons, Eusébio, was Black.

McCarthy did not shy away from criticising the remarks, calling them “very wrong,” though he acknowledged the emotional nature of football.
“He could have handled the situation better or chosen his words more carefully, but emotions got the better of him,” McCarthy said. “I know the statement he made was very wrong. But we are all human, and we all make mistakes.”
While taking issue with Mourinho’s comments, McCarthy was quick to defend the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager’s character. Having worked closely with him during his time at Porto, McCarthy insisted that Mourinho has always shown deep respect toward African players.
“Coming from someone I know personally, and knowing how he feels about our continent, our people, and the players who play for him, he is the most integrous man any African player will ever play for,” McCarthy added.
The South African legend concluded by expressing hope that Mourinho would eventually address the matter publicly and admit he may have erred.
“I think it was an emotional, difficult moment where he may have taken a position that was not the right one,” he explained. “And later on, I hope he will come out publicly and say he made a mistake, because that’s the kind of man I believe he is.”
Vinicius Junior: How Events Unfolded
The controversy stemmed from a tense Champions League encounter between Benfica and Real Madrid, which was temporarily halted for around 10 minutes after Vinicius Junior accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racial abuse.
After scoring a spectacular goal, Vinicius celebrated with a dance routine, a trademark expression of joy that has occasionally drawn criticism from opponents. During the aftermath, he alleged that Prestianni directed a racist insult at him, reportedly calling him a “monkey” while covering his mouth.
The Brazilian winger appeared visibly shaken and initially refused to continue playing. However, following support from teammates — including Kylian Mbappé — he resumed the match and completed the game.
In a statement released after the final whistle, Vinicius condemned racists as “cowards” and criticised what he described as a poorly implemented anti-racism protocol. He also voiced frustration at receiving a yellow card for his celebration while no immediate disciplinary action was taken against the alleged offender.
Vinicius further suggested that certain figures were indirectly protecting racist behaviour, comments widely interpreted as a response to Mourinho’s post-match remarks. Reports later indicated that the forward felt deeply hurt by the suggestion that his celebration had somehow triggered the abuse.
Maintaining his stance, Vinicius insisted that no form of celebration can ever justify racial insults. He called on UEFA to introduce stricter consequences to deter such incidents in the future. Ultimately, he lamented that what should have been a memorable victory for Real Madrid was overshadowed by an issue he has battled throughout his career.
