Benni McCarthy has emerged as a leading contender to take over one of Africa’s most prestigious football jobs. The current Harambee Stars coach is being widely tipped to succeed Hugo Broos as the next manager of South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana.
Several football pundits and former players have voiced their belief that McCarthy is the ideal candidate to guide South Africa into a new era once Broos steps down following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Broos, who took the reins in 2021, has revitalized Bafana Bafana, transforming them into a powerful force in African football. Under his leadership, South Africa secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup and finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, their best performance on the continental stage in more than 20 years.
The 73-year-old Belgian tactician has already confirmed that the upcoming World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be his final tournament before retirement.
In an interview with Briefly News, sports journalist Moses Mbongo expressed confidence in McCarthy’s ability to carry forward Broos’ legacy.
“I believe Hugo Broos might step down as Bafana Bafana coach after the World Cup next year,” Mbongo stated. “The federation should start preparing for that transition, and I think Benni McCarthy is the best man for the role. He’s already done wonders in Kenya, and the national team has improved greatly under his leadership.”
Broos’ Legacy and the Need for Continuity
Since taking charge, Broos has brought structure, discipline, and a renewed sense of belief to a side that previously struggled for stability. The former Cameroon boss successfully blended young, energetic talents with seasoned veterans, creating a balanced squad capable of challenging the continent’s top teams.
In October, Broos once again affirmed his intention to retire after the 2026 World Cup, calling it a “perfect swansong” for his distinguished career. Having represented Belgium at the 1986 World Cup, he said the upcoming global showpiece would be a fitting conclusion to his five decades in football.
“The World Cup marked the end of my playing career, and now it will mark the end of my coaching career,” Broos reflected in a previous interview.
With his departure looming, the South African Football Association (SAFA) faces the critical task of appointing a successor who can sustain the progress achieved over the last few years. Among the potential candidates, McCarthy’s name shines brightly, not only for his legendary playing career but also for his growing reputation as a coach who knows how to inspire and deliver results.
McCarthy’s Rising Coaching Profile
McCarthy, South Africa’s all-time leading goal scorer, has built an impressive coaching résumé. His time at AmaZulu FC was particularly notable, guiding the club to a historic CAF Champions League qualification, a first in their history. His tactical intelligence and motivational leadership earned him widespread recognition across the continent.
Currently at the helm of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, McCarthy has been credited with breathing new life into the team. His presence has reportedly lifted morale, sharpened team spirit, and improved overall performance, a transformation that mirrors the one Broos brought to Bafana Bafana.
If appointed, McCarthy could be poised to continue South Africa’s football resurgence and usher in a new era of national pride and competitive success.
