Benni McCarthy: Harambee Stars Coach Condemns Journalist's Claims About East Africa's AFCON 2027 Hosting

Benni McCarthy has hit back at comments made by Ivorian journalist Mamadou Gaye, firmly stating that East Africa is more than capable of successfully hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has strongly criticised Mamadou Gaye over remarks questioning East Africa’s readiness to stage the continental showpiece. The journalist suggested that the region may struggle to meet the logistical and infrastructural demands of AFCON, especially when compared to the high standards set by Morocco during the 2025 tournament.

Speaking while in Morocco, Gaye raised concerns about transport and infrastructure in East Africa, claiming that teams and fans could face difficulties moving between host nations. He alleged that poor road networks could make travel across borders time-consuming and inconvenient.

“AFCON is heading to three East African countries, where I already have been. No roads within the countries. Some of my colleagues from East Africa told me from one country to another one will take you two days to drive,” Mamadou Gaye said.

Benni McCarthy Condemns Comments from Mamadou Gaye

In response, Benni McCarthy dismissed the remarks, describing them as misguided and uninformed. The former Manchester United attacking coach insisted that Kenya, alongside co-hosts Tanzania and Uganda, possesses the necessary infrastructure, organisation, and experience to deliver a successful AFCON tournament.

McCarthy pointed out that Gaye’s comments were rooted in ignorance and failed to reflect the progress made by the region in recent years. He emphasised that East Africa has modern stadiums, improving transport networks, and a passionate football fan base that would elevate the tournament’s atmosphere.

“Completely and utterly disagree with Mamadou on this one. Kenya is absolutely beautiful and well capable of hosting any major tournament together with Tanzania and Uganda. Very ignorant of you Mr. Mamadou,” McCarthy said.

The Harambee Stars coach further referenced recent successes as evidence of the region’s readiness. The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) marked a major milestone, as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania jointly hosted the first-ever cross-border CAF competition.

The tournament was widely praised for its efficient logistics and electric atmosphere. Stadiums such as Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium and Dar es Salaam’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium regularly attracted crowds of over 60,000 fans, while Uganda’s refurbished Mandela National Stadium earned acclaim for its modern facilities and quality playing surface.

Beyond the action on the pitch, CHAN 2024 served as a crucial test run for AFCON 2027. Visa-free travel arrangements for supporters and coordinated security measures highlighted a new level of regional cooperation, reinforcing confidence in East Africa’s ability to host Africa’s biggest football event.
