Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has shared how his involvement is helping elevate the standards of the FKF Premier League since taking charge of Kenya’s national team.
McCarthy, who took over in March 2025, has made it a priority to attend FKF Premier League matches regularly. His goal is not only to monitor the progress of players in the national setup but also to identify new, undiscovered talent. The South African tactician believes his presence in stadiums has inspired players to perform better, knowing they have a real chance to catch the national coach’s attention.
“It’s vital for players to know that the national team coach is watching and following their progress,” McCarthy said. “It motivates both current and aspiring players to give their best every game because one great moment could earn them a place in the national team.”
How McCarthy’s Presence is Boosting the League
McCarthy believes his active participation has had a direct impact on improving the quality and competitiveness of the FKF Premier League. His frequent visits, along with those of his technical staff, have encouraged players to raise their standards and professionalism on the pitch.
“When the national team coach is in attendance, the level of play naturally rises,” he explained. “Even when I can’t be there personally, my technical team ensures we’re always represented. It’s crucial for local players to see that we value them just as much as those playing abroad.”
The Harambee Stars coach emphasized his inclusive approach, ensuring that both local-based and foreign-based players have equal opportunities to represent Kenya. This has boosted morale among local players and added intensity to league matches.
Since McCarthy’s appointment, several FKF Premier League stars have earned national team call-ups and impressed on the international stage. The coach remains focused on expanding his player pool as he prepares the team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the domestic league serving as a vital source of talent.
