There is growing pressure on Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will feature more teams, while insisting the tournament will go ahead in East Africa as planned.
The three host nations now face an even bigger task following CAF’s announcement of key changes set to begin with the 2027 edition of the competition. CAF president Patrice Motsepe revealed on Sunday that the tournament will expand from 24 to 28 teams, a move that significantly raises the stakes for the co-hosts.
East Africa is already under scrutiny after a recent CAF inspection highlighted major shortcomings in infrastructure, with all three countries reportedly lagging behind schedule. The expansion means the tournament will now consist of seven groups of four teams instead of the current six, increasing the demand for more venues and improved facilities. At least two suitable stadiums will be required from each host nation, further intensifying the urgency to deliver.
Motsepe Reaffirms East Africa’s Hosting Rights
Despite doubts raised about the region’s readiness, Motsepe has firmly stated that AFCON 2027 will remain in East Africa. He also confirmed plans to visit the region in May to evaluate the progress being made.
Motsepe emphasized the importance of reliability and consistency in African football, noting that the sport must grow in regions with strong potential like East Africa. His remarks serve as both reassurance and a challenge to the host nations.
While his backing provides confidence, it also puts additional pressure on Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to accelerate preparations. Kenya is yet to fully commence stadium renovations and training facility construction. In Uganda, the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole remains behind schedule, while the newly built Hoima City Stadium still faces several shortcomings. Concerns have also been raised about the limited availability of high-quality accommodation in the Bunyoro region, where the stadium is located.
