AFCON 2027: Strict CAF Training Ground Standards Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Must Fulfil

Following the latest inspection tour of facilities earmarked for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has left Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with a clear checklist of requirements—especially regarding training venues.

CAF officials recently wrapped up an assessment visit across East Africa as preparations intensify for the continental showpiece. With the tournament to be jointly hosted by the three nations, responsibility now shifts squarely to the host governments and football bodies to ensure every venue meets the governing body’s standards.

The inspection team toured facilities in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Nairobi and Kampala, placing particular emphasis on safety, security and overall infrastructure readiness. While much of the public discussion has centred on match stadiums, training grounds are equally vital to the smooth organisation of a competition of AFCON’s scale.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe eased concerns over the tournament’s scheduling during the visit, reaffirming that preparations remain on course. However, certification of facilities—particularly training sites—will depend on strict adherence to CAF’s technical guidelines.

Training Venues Identified in Kenya

In Kenya, several facilities have already been earmarked to serve as training bases. These include Nyayo National Stadium, Ulinzi Sports Complex, Kenya Police Sacco Grounds and Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani (Annex A and B). Additionally, two outdoor training pitches at Talanta Stadium have been proposed for use during the tournament.

The Ministry of Sports has also cited Thika Stadium—currently under construction—as a potential training venue, alongside facilities at the Kenya Academy of Sports.

However, identification alone does not guarantee approval. Each ground must undergo CAF’s rigorous certification process before being cleared for use.

Pitch and Surface Standards

One of the most critical areas of evaluation is the playing surface. CAF requires a flat, even pitch with either natural grass, hybrid turf or approved artificial grass. Importantly, the field must display only football-specific markings—no overlapping lines from other sports.

Grass height must be maintained between 20mm and 30mm, ensuring optimal playing conditions. An efficient drainage system is mandatory to prevent waterlogging during heavy rains, and an automated sprinkler system must be in place to maintain consistent moisture levels for healthy turf.

Kenya relied on natural grass surfaces during CHAN 2024, and current indications suggest the same approach will be adopted for AFCON 2027, given that many of the same venues are expected to be utilised.

Dimensions and Equipment Requirements

CAF also stipulates precise pitch dimensions. Training fields must measure between 100 and 110 metres in length and 64 to 75 metres in width. These specifications mirror international match standards to ensure teams train under competition-like conditions.

Each facility must provide at least two movable goalposts to allow teams flexibility in structuring drills and tactical sessions. Adjacent to the pitch, a technical bench with a minimum of 20 seats must be available for reserve players and coaching staff.

Lighting, Dressing Rooms and Security

Floodlighting is another non-negotiable element. Training grounds must be equipped with lighting systems delivering at least 500 LUX, enabling night sessions where necessary.

Dressing room facilities must meet strict capacity guidelines, including 23 seats and lockers, a minimum of five showers, three urinals, and adequate toilets and washbasins. These requirements are designed to ensure comfort and professionalism for participating teams.

Security is equally paramount. Every training venue must be enclosed with a secure perimeter fence and have controlled, well-managed entry and exit points to guarantee safety for players and officials.

Countdown to 2027

Although Kenya satisfied many of these benchmarks during CHAN 2024, some facilities fell short of full compliance. With AFCON representing a far larger and more scrutinised tournament, CAF has made it clear that there will be no room for compromise.

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for June and July, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania now have just under eighteen months to fine-tune their infrastructure and meet every stipulated requirement.
