Man Utd Down Man City in Carrick’s First Game at the Helm

Michael Carrick’s return to the Manchester United dugout began in perfect fashion as the Red Devils produced a commanding performance to beat local rivals Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford.

In his second spell as United’s caretaker manager, following a brief stint in 2021, Carrick oversaw an energetic and well-organised display that laid the foundations for a thoroughly deserved victory. United dominated large spells of the first half but went into the break frustrated after failing to convert their chances.

Harry Maguire came agonisingly close to opening the scoring early on, crashing a powerful header against the crossbar, while both Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes saw goals ruled out for offside. Despite the setbacks, United maintained their tempo and intensity after the restart.

The breakthrough finally arrived just after the hour mark when Bryan Mbeumo kept his composure to finish clinically, sparking wild celebrations inside Old Trafford. The hosts then doubled their advantage in the 76th minute as Patrick Dorgu reacted quickest to score from close range. Mason Mount later joined Amad and Fernandes in having a goal disallowed, but it did little to dampen the mood.

The result lifts Manchester United into the Premier League’s top four ahead of the remaining weekend fixtures, while Manchester City remain six points behind league leaders Arsenal, having played one game more.

How the Match Unfolded

Manchester United made a fast start and almost took the lead inside three minutes. Maguire rose highest from a set piece but saw his header rattle the crossbar, with City momentarily scrambling to clear the danger.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was soon called into action again, producing a sharp save to deny Dorgu from a tight angle. Moments later, Amad appeared to have given United the lead after a slick counter-attack, only for the offside flag to intervene.

Fernandes suffered the same fate midway through the half, his composed finish ruled out after City threatened at the other end. Max Alleyne’s header was blocked by a combination of Senne Lammens and Diogo Dalot, while Antoine Semenyo curled an effort narrowly wide.

United resumed the second half with renewed purpose and carved out a golden double chance 12 minutes after the restart. Donnarumma stood firm, first parrying Amad’s fierce strike before smothering Casemiro’s follow-up.

The Italian keeper then produced an outstanding stop to keep out Mbeumo’s volley, but he was finally beaten in the 65th minute. Mbeumo finished off a swift counter-attack that began with him winning possession from a City free-kick.

United’s dominance was reflected in a second goal soon after. Substitute Matheus Cunha delivered a dangerous low cross, and Dorgu timed his run perfectly to slip between two defenders and apply the finish. Amad later struck the post, while Mount’s late effort was ruled out for offside as United comfortably saw out the win.

Carrick Restores Belief at Old Trafford

The past few days have been turbulent for Manchester United. Darren Fletcher’s brief interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal yielded disappointing results, prompting the club to turn to Carrick to steady the situation until the end of the season.

Carrick spoke before the match about restoring the “magic” of Old Trafford, and his players responded with a confident and cohesive display. He deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mbeumo leading the line and constantly testing City’s high defensive line. His intelligent movement created space for Dorgu and Amad to exploit from wide areas.

Although United could have been punished for missed opportunities before the break, they remained disciplined defensively and devastating on the counter-attack. The link-up between Mbeumo and Fernandes proved decisive for the opening goal.

United’s pace and physicality out wide repeatedly troubled City, and Dorgu’s determination was rewarded with a well-taken second goal. In truth, the hosts were unlucky not to win by a wider margin, with several marginal offside decisions denying them further goals.

Carrick will hope this positive momentum carries into next week’s daunting trip to league leaders Arsenal, while City may now find themselves relying on favours elsewhere in the title race.
