Enzo Fernández has been left out of Chelsea’s squad for their upcoming fixtures against Port Vale in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the Premier League, following comments he made regarding his future and admiration for Real Madrid.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that the Argentine midfielder will not be available for either match, explaining that the decision was made internally after discussions within the club. While the situation has sparked attention due to transfer speculation, Rosenior stressed that the move is a temporary sanction rather than a long-term punishment.
Fernández has recently been linked with a potential summer switch to Real Madrid, and his comments during and after international duty intensified speculation about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea Explain Decision Behind Exclusion
Speaking to the media ahead of the weekend fixture, Rosenior confirmed the club’s stance on the matter and clarified that the decision had been made jointly by the coaching staff and management.
He stated that he had spoken directly with Fernández before finalising the decision, adding that while he respects the midfielder as both a person and a professional, the club felt certain comments crossed an internal boundary.
Rosenior explained that the issue was not about talent or performance but about maintaining standards within the club’s culture. According to him, the midfielder’s remarks were viewed as inappropriate given his leadership role within the squad.
Despite the suspension for the two matches, Rosenior was keen to emphasise that Fernández remains an important part of the team and that the situation is not irreversible.
Transfer Talk Intensifies After Public Remarks
Speculation around Fernández’s future has been building for months, with reports suggesting strong interest from Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.
The midfielder, who joined Chelsea from SL Benfica for a then-British record fee, has a contract running until 2032, placing Chelsea in a strong negotiating position. However, the club is believed to be open to major offers exceeding £100 million for the right circumstances.
After Chelsea’s heavy UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Fernández was asked about his future and admitted uncertainty, stating he was unsure whether he would remain at the club beyond the season.
During international duty with Argentina, he further fuelled speculation by expressing admiration for Madrid and acknowledging that living and playing in the Spanish capital would appeal to him. Those remarks were widely circulated and interpreted as a signal of openness to a future move.
Chelsea, however, remain firm that no official decision has been made regarding his future, and the club continues to regard him as part of their long-term project.
Rosenior: “A Line Was Crossed”
Rosenior made it clear that the decision to drop Fernández was not taken lightly, but was necessary in the context of protecting team unity and standards.
He described the midfielder’s comments as disappointing, particularly given his influence within the squad, but also insisted there were no personal issues between them.
The coach reiterated that Fernández remains respected within the dressing room and praised his commitment on the pitch, even during difficult results.
Rosenior added that the sanction is temporary and that the door remains open for the midfielder to return immediately after the two-match absence.
He stressed that the objective is to reinforce discipline and ensure players understand the importance of speaking responsibly about the club while representing it publicly.
Cucurella Also Warned Over Public Criticism
The controversy surrounding Fernández was not the only internal issue Chelsea addressed during the international break.
Defender Marc Cucurella also drew attention after publicly criticising Chelsea’s recruitment strategy and questioning recent managerial changes, including the departure of former head coach Enzo Maresca.
Unlike Fernández, however, Cucurella will not face suspension and remains available for selection. Rosenior confirmed that the defender has already held a private conversation with him regarding the comments.
The coach expressed disappointment that the remarks were made publicly rather than being discussed internally, but insisted the matter has been resolved through dialogue.
He emphasised that Chelsea’s leadership structure encourages open communication and that players are always welcome to express concerns directly to the coaching staff or sporting directors.
Rosenior also referenced the example of senior players such as Reece James, noting that strong internal relationships have contributed to contract renewals and squad stability.
Internal Culture and Leadership Standards
Chelsea’s coaching staff have reportedly been working to rebuild unity and discipline within the squad following a period of inconsistency and managerial changes.
Rosenior highlighted that establishing trust between players and staff takes time, particularly given the number of fixtures and rapid turnover of matches in the current campaign.
He reiterated that while players are encouraged to be honest, there is an expectation that sensitive issues are handled privately rather than through media interviews.
Despite the recent tension, Rosenior insisted the squad remains committed to the club’s long-term vision and that improvements are already being planned for the summer transfer window.
Fernández’s Future Still Uncertain
Even with his current suspension, Fernández remains a central figure in discussions about Chelsea’s long-term squad planning. His technical ability and experience continue to make him a valuable asset, but his future is now the subject of increased scrutiny.
With interest from Real Madrid and other European giants expected to persist, Chelsea may face a major decision in the upcoming transfer window.
For now, however, the focus remains on the immediate situation, with Fernández set to miss two crucial matches as the club looks to maintain momentum in domestic and cup competitions.
Rosenior concluded by reiterating that the situation is not a permanent breakdown in relations, but rather a corrective step aimed at maintaining standards and unity within the squad.
