The former Harambee Stars defender led Kenya Police to their first-ever FKF Premier League title, which they received from Raila Odinga in a memorable ceremony last June.
Kenya Police captain David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a “true gentleman” and one of Kenya’s most passionate supporters of sports.
Speaking to Tata Sports ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League return leg against Al Hilal Omdurman, Ochieng expressed the squad’s deep sorrow over Odinga’s passing. The opposition leader, who also served as Gor Mahia’s patron, had long been a vocal champion of sports development across the country.
“It’s a sad moment for everyone because we all understand the enormous impact Baba had on sports, from the national teams to local clubs,” Ochieng said. “Even though he was Gor Mahia’s patron, he still celebrated us when we won the league and personally presented us with the trophy. That act alone showed what kind of leader and person he truly was.”
Ochieng shared that he had the privilege of meeting Odinga several times and described him as a humble, respectful, and unifying figure whose love for sports went far beyond football.
“I met him three times, twice with the national team and once with Police FC,” he recalled. “He was always approachable and full of wisdom. He didn’t just support football; he was there for rugby, athletics, and many other sports disciplines. Kenya has truly lost a statesman and one of the strongest advocates for our athletes.”
Celebrating Baba’s Legacy
Odinga will be laid to rest at his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday. His memorial service will take place at Nyayo Stadium, a venue closely tied to his political and sporting journey, where he witnessed countless historic moments.
Kenya Police were initially scheduled to host their fixture at the same venue but will now face Al Hilal at the Ulinzi Sports Complex behind closed doors. Despite the change, Ochieng believes Odinga deserves a send-off that honors his lifelong service to the nation.
“We have to celebrate Baba for everything he did,” he said. “He gave his all for Kenya, not just in politics but in uplifting communities and supporting sports. There’s nothing more we could have asked of him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family find comfort in knowing how many lives he touched. Life must go on, but his legacy will continue to inspire us.”
Looking ahead to their CAF Champions League clash, Ochieng said the team plans to channel their emotions into a strong performance, dedicating their effort to Odinga’s memory.
“His passing has given us a deep sense of motivation before this match,” he noted. “We know Al Hilal are a tough side, but we’re ready for the challenge. It’s a decisive tie because both teams want to make it to the group stage. We’re representing Kenya on the continental stage, and if we win, that victory will be for Baba. Police FC deserve to be among Africa’s best, and we’ll give everything to make the country proud.”
Kenya Police will need a win to gain an advantage before traveling to Zanzibar for the return leg against the Sudanese powerhouse.
