Kenya’s middle-distance queen and 1500m world record holder, Faith Kipyegon, has wrapped up her season on a triumphant note, expressing deep gratitude after clinching victory at Alexis Ohanian’s women-only Athlos event.
The four-time world 1500m champion made her second consecutive appearance at the meet, following her win in last year’s 1500m race. This time, she took on the mile event and once again emerged on top, earning a handsome $60,000 (approximately Ksh 7.7 million) prize for her dominant performance.
Kipyegon ran a tactically brilliant race, clocking 4:17.78, which marked the fastest mile ever run on U.S. soil. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay finished second in 4:19.75, while American Nikki Hiltz secured third place with 4:32.51.
“I Wanted to End My Season Beautifully”
Speaking after her victory, Kipyegon reflected on the journey that led to this moment. She revealed that her main focus going into the race was to execute it perfectly and conclude her season on a positive note.
The three-time Olympic champion admitted that things were quite different this year compared to her previous outing, especially since she switched from her signature 1500m event to the mile. Despite the shift and challenging conditions, she managed to deliver yet another masterclass performance.
“I just wanted to finish my race beautifully,” Kipyegon said in an interview shared by Letsrun.com. “I started my season a few months ago, and my goal was to end it in the best way possible. That’s exactly what I did, I just wanted to run, enjoy the race, and soak in the atmosphere.”
She noted that the race pace was faster than last year’s and that the cooler temperatures made it tougher to maintain rhythm. “This year was different; it was a bit cold, and I ran a mile instead of 1500m,” she added, as quoted by Citius Mag. “After crossing the finish line, I was coughing a lot, but I’m happy I pulled through.”
The world 5000m silver medallist also mentioned that while last year’s event had warmer, more favorable conditions, she was simply thankful to have completed her season strongly. “We thank God we’ve finished the season well,” she said. “This was my last start line of the year, and it feels great to close on a high.”
“Blessed to Be Part of Athlos”
Kipyegon went on to express her appreciation for being invited to Athlos for a second time, praising the initiative’s efforts to elevate women’s sports. The event, founded by Alexis Ohanian, husband to tennis legend Serena Williams, brings together elite female athletes in a unique environment that blends competition with culture.
“It’s so amazing to be here again and get another opportunity to participate,” she shared. “I feel blessed to be part of this event.”
She highlighted how Athlos goes beyond athletics by incorporating music, fashion, and entertainment, making it more than just a sporting competition. “It’s not only about running; there’s so much happening around it. It’s fun, exciting, and empowering to be part of,” Kipyegon said.
Ending the Year on a High
Faith Kipyegon’s victory at Athlos caps off another exceptional year for the Kenyan superstar, who continues to redefine women’s middle-distance running. Her consistency, humility, and ability to perform under pressure have made her one of the most admired figures in global athletics.
As she takes a well-deserved break, Kipyegon plans to return home to spend quality time with her family before gearing up for another busy season. With her characteristic grace, she ends the year feeling fulfilled, thankful for her achievements, her health, and the continued rise of women’s athletics worldwide.
For Kipyegon, this win was a celebration of hard work, faith, and the spirit of women in sport.
