Kenyan athletics icons Faith Kipyegon and Mary Moraa are among the big names who could walk away with more than Ksh30 million if they shatter a world record at this year’s women-only ATHLOS track meet.
The second edition of the competition, set for October 10 in New York, promises to be historic. Kipyegon, who headlines the mile race, will compete alongside other stars such as Mary Moraa and American long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall. The meet will also feature events in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, and long jump.
Winners in each discipline will pocket $60,000 (around Ksh7.7 million), while second and third places will earn $25,000 (Ksh3.2 million) and $10,000 (Ksh1.2 million) respectively. However, the highlight is the record $250,000 (Ksh32.3 million) bonus on offer for any athlete who manages to break a world record during the one-day showcase.
Cash App Partnership Revolutionizes Athlete Payments
This unprecedented payout comes after a major partnership between ATHLOS and the digital payment platform Cash App. The collaboration will allow athletes to receive their prize money instantly once results are confirmed, a move designed to transform the way track athletes are compensated.
“This year, Cash App is enabling immediate prize payments for all eligible athletes the moment results are confirmed,” ATHLOS announced on social media. “Beyond faster payouts, Cash App is also offering a $250,000 world-record bonus to any athlete who sets a new world mark at Athlos NYC.”
The timing of the announcement also comes as rival series Grand Slam Track faces criticism for delayed payments. ATHLOS took the chance to emphasize its athlete-first approach, stating: “Faster payouts mean real-time recognition and an athlete-first experience, raising the bar for the sport.”
Organizers clarified that eligibility rules apply. Instant transfers will be available for verified Cash App accounts, while others will be paid via wire. In addition, all prizes and bonuses are subject to anti-doping compliance and official record ratification.
Alongside Kipyegon and Moraa, this year’s ATHLOS will welcome several global stars. Africa’s fastest woman Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith is on the lineup, along with American sprinter Brittany Brown. Olympic champions Masai Russell, Marileidy Paulino, and former 400m world champion Salwa Eid Naser are also expected to light up the New York event.
With its groundbreaking payouts and world-class field, the 2025 ATHLOS edition is shaping up to be a landmark moment for women’s athletics.
