Faith Kipyegon Takes on Maternal Health Crisis with Bold Project in Kenya

The four-time world champion is channeling her influence into a new initiative aimed at strengthening maternal and child healthcare in her hometown.

Three-time Olympic 1500m gold medallist Faith Kipyegon is stepping beyond the track to address one of Kenya’s most persistent public health challenges — maternal and infant mortality. Using her global profile and personal experience, the Kenyan athletics icon has launched plans for a maternity ward designed to improve access to quality care for expectant mothers and newborns.

Kipyegon has officially broken ground on the Dare to Dream Maternity Ward, a healthcare facility scheduled to be constructed later this year in Keringet, her hometown. The project marks a significant milestone in her growing commitment to social impact, particularly in rural communities where access to medical services remains limited.

While the past few years have seen Kipyegon dominate middle-distance running, rewriting record books and cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s greatest athletes, her attention has increasingly turned to life beyond competition. Since becoming a mother in 2018, she has become more aware of the risks many Kenyan women face during pregnancy and childbirth.

Applying the same discipline and resolve that define her athletic career, Kipyegon is now pursuing change off the track with equal intensity. Speaking during the project’s launch, she described the initiative as a milestone that transcends sport and speaks directly to saving lives.

On Sunday, January 25, the Olympic champion returned to Keringet for the official launch ceremony, held at the Immaculate Conception grounds where the maternity ward will be built. The location reflects the personal nature of the project, rooted in her upbringing and firsthand experiences within the community.

Growing up in the area, Kipyegon witnessed repeated cases of women struggling to access timely and adequate maternity care. Those memories, she explained, have stayed with her over the years, reinforcing her determination to help change a reality where childbirth too often ends in tragedy. Many expectant mothers, she noted, are forced to travel long distances or rely on under-equipped facilities, increasing the risks for both mothers and infants.

According to data from the World Health Organisation, Kenya records roughly 350 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This statistic translates to an estimated 16 women losing their lives each day due to pregnancy-related complications — a figure that has deeply influenced Kipyegon’s resolve to act.

The concept for the maternity ward took shape last June while Kipyegon was preparing for her ambitious attempt to run a mile in under four minutes. Although she narrowly missed the historic mark, the period proved pivotal. Conversations with her sponsor, Nike, alongside collaboration with the Franciscan Sisters of Immaculate Conception, laid the foundation for turning her long-held vision into reality.

Kipyegon has stressed that while the maternity wing will bear her name, the project itself is focused on the women, children, and families it aims to serve. The goal is to create a safe, well-equipped space where mothers can give birth with dignity and confidence, and where newborns receive proper care from their first moments of life.

The launch attracted widespread support from the athletics community, including fellow Olympic champion and longtime training partner Eliud Kipchoge, highlighting the collective backing behind a project that seeks to deliver hope, health, and lasting change well beyond the world of sport.
