Faith Kipyegon Has Expressed Her Confidence in the New Athletic Generation to Continue Her Legacy

Three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon has expressed full confidence in Kenya’s new generation of 1500m runners, saying they are ready to continue her legacy as she prepares for the next phase of her illustrious career.

Kipyegon, a four-time world champion and world record holder in the 1500m, has dominated the event for nearly a decade. However, she now feels the time is right to pursue new challenges while trusting that the younger talents she has inspired will maintain Kenya’s dominance in the distance.

The celebrated middle-distance runner has secured three Olympic gold medals in the 1500m, beginning her incredible streak at the 2016 Rio Games and continuing her success at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Her most recent triumph came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, further cementing her status as one of the greatest athletes in history.

In addition to her Olympic success, Kipyegon has also won four world titles in the 1500m. She first captured gold at the 2017 World Championships in London before taking silver at the 2019 edition after returning from maternity leave. She reclaimed her dominance with back-to-back world titles in Oregon (2022), Budapest (2023), and Tokyo (2025). Beyond her championship victories, Kipyegon also holds the world record in the event, showcasing her consistency and unmatched talent.

Faith Kipyegon Confident in Kenya’s Next 1500m Generation

Kipyegon has voiced her strong belief that the next wave of Kenyan 1500m runners, including Dorcus Ewoi and Nelly Chepchirchir, will continue to bring glory to the nation. She explained that training and competing alongside these athletes has given them valuable experience, discipline, and confidence.

According to Kipyegon, their rapid progress is proof that Kenya’s rich tradition in the 1500m remains secure, even as she plans to transition to longer distances. She emphasized that Ewoi, Chepchirchir, and their peers have demonstrated both strength and determination, qualities she believes will help them achieve great things on the world stage.

“Yeah, I would say they’re learning a lot now that I’m still running with them. They’re learning a lot from me, and they’re motivated to know that when I move to a longer distance, the 1500m will still be in safe hands for Kenya,” Kipyegon said during an interview with Citius Mag.

She continued, “I hope they’ll do an amazing job. I’ll hand the baton to them when I move on, and I’m confident they’ll perform very well. They’re powerful and developing in a great way.”

Her faith in the young athletes is not misplaced. Dorcus Ewoi recently earned a silver medal behind Kipyegon in the women’s 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, while Nelly Chepchirchir finished in fourth place. Their performances not only highlight their growing potential but also affirm Kipyegon’s belief that Kenya’s 1500m dominance will continue for years to come.
