President Félix Tshisekedi has unveiled a series of remarkable rewards for the Democratic Republic of Congo national team after they secured a historic return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in over five decades.
The team, popularly known as the Leopards, has booked a place at the global showpiece tournament, ending a 52-year absence that had long defined Congolese football’s struggles on the international stage.
According to reports from Africa Soccer, the president hosted a grand ceremony at the People’s Palace to celebrate the squad’s achievement, recognising both players and technical staff for their resilience and determination throughout the campaign.
DR Congo Stars and Technical Bench Rewarded
During the colourful event, Tshisekedi announced an impressive reward package as a token of appreciation for the team’s efforts. Every player and member of the coaching staff will receive a brand-new Jeep, a parcel of land, and a financial bonus.
In his speech, the president praised the squad’s discipline and commitment, noting that their journey to qualification demanded immense sacrifice and unity. He also challenged the team to build on this success and make World Cup appearances a consistent expectation rather than a rare milestone.
“From now on, qualifying for the World Cup should become routine,” he declared, setting a bold vision for the future of the national side.
Leopards’ Dramatic Journey to Qualification
DR Congo’s route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was anything but straightforward. Their campaign reached a turning point during the CAF qualifiers when they claimed a crucial victory over African giants Nigeria.
However, the triumph was briefly overshadowed by a formal complaint from the Nigeria Football Federation concerning the eligibility of Axel Tuanzebe, whose documentation came under scrutiny.
After FIFA dismissed the appeal and cleared DR Congo of any wrongdoing, the Leopards regained focus and advanced to the decisive intercontinental playoff round with renewed confidence.
In a tense clash held in Mexico, Tuanzebe emerged as the unlikely hero, scoring a dramatic winner deep into extra time to secure victory over Jamaica. The unforgettable moment sealed DR Congo’s long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage, marking a powerful resurgence for the nation.
