Gabby Thomas has issued an early-season warning to fellow sprint stars Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson after opening her campaign in impressive fashion, while insisting her best performances are still to come.
Despite delivering a commanding display at the Texas Relays, Thomas remains focused on long-term progress as she builds momentum toward a crucial Olympic year.
The triple Olympic medallist clocked 11.00 seconds in the 100m, securing victory and equalling her personal best in the process.
Measured Start Despite Eye-Catching Performance
What made the performance even more significant was the challenging weather, with cold and wet conditions failing to slow her down. It served as a clear indicator that Thomas is already in strong shape early in the season.
However, rather than getting carried away by the result, the American sprinter stressed that this race is only the beginning of a much longer journey. Having skipped the indoor season to prioritise training, she views this outing as a stepping stone rather than a finished product.
Thomas Shares Mindset After Opening Win
Speaking after the race via social media, Thomas offered insight into her grounded approach.
“One of the better season openers today,” she wrote.
“Got the win at Texas Relays & tied my 100m PB in some cold and wet conditions. Having tons of fun. Still lots of work to do this season. Gonna keep chopping wood.”
Her comments reflect a disciplined mindset shaped by the setbacks she endured in 2025, when injuries disrupted her rhythm and forced her to withdraw from several major competitions. That difficult period appears to have reinforced her patience and commitment to steady improvement.
Focused on Execution and Future Gains
Thomas emphasised that her primary goal in the race was execution rather than perfection. She acknowledged that while the performance was not flawless, it successfully showcased key elements she has been refining in training.
“The goal for today was to do exactly what I did,” she explained.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be a perfect race, but I have a lot of strong points in my race that I was focused on executing today, that I know will translate later on in the season to some faster times.”
Her approach highlights a clear strategy: build consistency now in order to peak when it matters most.
Eyes Set on Bigger Achievements
Thomas has steadily built an impressive résumé, including a bronze medal in the 200m at the Tokyo Olympics, a silver at the World Championships, and relay success with Team USA. She also claimed Olympic gold in Paris, further cementing her status among the elite.
Now fully dedicated to her track career after completing her studies in epidemiology, Thomas is targeting even greater accomplishments. Her refusal to settle—even after matching a personal best—demonstrates the relentless drive that keeps her among the world’s top contenders.
