Georgia Hunter Bell Reveals When She Realized Lilian Odira Was a 'Dangerous' Rival

Georgia Hunter Bell has shared how Lilian Odira’s performance and composure at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo made her realize she was facing one of the toughest opponents of her career in the women’s 800m final.

Odira produced a stunning run to claim gold in the final, setting a new personal best of 1:54.62. Her victory not only secured the world title but also erased the long-standing 42-year-old record of 1:54.68, previously held by Czech great Jarmila Kratochvilova since 1983.

Hunter Bell and Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson followed Odira across the finish line in a nail-biting race, taking silver and bronze, respectively. The two clocked near-identical times, with Hunter Bell finishing in 1:54.90 and Hodgkinson just a fraction behind at 1:54.91.

Georgia Hunter Bell: Recognizing a Serious Contender

Reflecting on the dramatic final, Hunter Bell revealed the moment she first considered Odira a significant rival. She explained that her attention was drawn to the Kenyan during the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia, where Odira placed second behind Hodgkinson with an impressive time of 1:56.52.

Heading into the championships, Hunter Bell admitted she was already aware of Odira’s rising form. The Kenyan’s consistency in both the heats and semifinals confirmed those suspicions, as she ran 1:57.86 and 1:56.85, displaying composure and confidence.

“I saw her come second in Keely’s comeback race, but Keely had beaten her by a big margin. That’s when I thought, ‘She’s a 1:56 runner,’” Hunter Bell told reporters. “Then in the rounds here, she looked really dangerous. She ran a 1:57 and a 1:56 with ease, so I knew coming into the final that she would be a major threat.”

The Turning Point in the Final

Hunter Bell admitted she believed she had a strong chance of winning gold in Tokyo, but Odira’s late surge proved unstoppable. The Australian runner confessed that a tactical error cost her the top spot on the podium.

Her coach, Trevor Painter, had advised her not to get stuck on the inside rail, but in the heat of the moment, Hunter Bell made the very mistake he warned about.

“I got boxed in on the inside, and Trev told me before the race, ‘Don’t go on the inside rail.’ But when you see a gap there, it’s tempting because the alternative is going wide,” she explained. “For a moment, I really thought I was going to win it. I felt strong, but Odira just had the perfect finish.”

Praise for a Worthy Champion

Despite the disappointment of missing out on gold by a narrow margin, Hunter Bell was gracious in defeat. She praised Odira for her strength, composure, and flawless execution in one of the most competitive 800m races in history.

“Lilian really deserved it,” Hunter Bell concluded. “She ran with such confidence and made all the right moves. She’s shown she’s a true champion.”

With her record-breaking run, Lilian Odira has cemented herself as the new face of women’s middle-distance running, while Hunter Bell and Hodgkinson remain determined challengers for future global titles.
