The decision to expand the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to 16 teams could be a turning point for Kenya’s Harambee Starlets, giving them a stronger chance to qualify consistently and build their presence on the continental stage.
Kenya’s women’s national football team is preparing for a decisive clash against Gambia in the final round of the current WAFCON qualifiers. While next year’s tournament will still feature 12 teams, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that from 2026, the championship will increase to 16 participants. For a nation that has only appeared once at the finals, back in 2016, this expansion provides renewed hope.
The new format is expected to introduce an additional qualifying round, where 11 countries will battle for four remaining slots. This structure not only broadens the competition but also improves the odds for emerging sides like Kenya to earn a place more often. Regular participation would mean crucial international exposure, competitive growth, and increased visibility for local players.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe highlighted the federation’s long-term vision, noting, “I am pleased with the progress in women’s football across Africa. Ensuring both men and women are fairly rewarded is a priority. I can assure you that women’s football will continue to develop because it remains a key focus area.”
A New Chapter for Kenyan Women’s Football
Since its launch in 1998, WAFCON featured only eight teams until 2018, before expanding to 12 sides for the 2022 edition. The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but CAF has since intensified its investment in the women’s game. For instance, prize money for the 2024 competition rose by 45%, reaching $3.45 million, with Nigeria taking home $1 million for clinching a record 10th title.
For the Harambee Starlets, this growth in investment and opportunities presents a pathway to reshape their future. Even if the current qualification attempt against Gambia does not succeed, the 2026 edition’s expanded slots offer a realistic return to continental football.
CAF is expected to finalize and share details of the revamped qualification structure after its upcoming executive committee meeting in Kinshasa. Whatever the outcome, the Harambee Starlets now have reason to believe that the road to WAFCON is becoming more accessible than ever before.
