Arsenal great Ian Wright has launched a fierce criticism of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, accusing him of mishandling young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and describing the situation as “very embarrassing.”
Wright’s remarks followed Mainoo’s impressive display in United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, a performance that further underlined the 20-year-old’s revival since Michael Carrick stepped in as interim manager. The academy graduate has quickly re-established himself as a key figure in the side after enduring a frustrating spell on the fringes.
During Amorim’s tenure, Mainoo found opportunities hard to come by. Despite his reputation as one of the club’s brightest prospects, he made only one start this season — a disappointing Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. The lack of minutes reportedly left the midfielder considering a loan switch to Serie A outfit Napoli in search of regular football.
Carrick’s arrival has dramatically changed that narrative. Restored straight to the starting XI, Mainoo has rediscovered the composure and authority that previously earned him a place in England’s European Championship squad at just 18. His recent performances suggest a player brimming with confidence and eager to prove a point.
Speaking on Premier League World, Wright did not hold back in his assessment of Amorim’s decisions.
Wright Questions Amorim’s Judgment
“Everyone was puzzled by what was going on under Ruben Amorim,” Wright said. “When you see someone like Mainoo, who hasn’t been playing, step into a Manchester United midfield that’s been under scrutiny and perform with that level of quality — it raises serious questions.”
Wright argued that the Portuguese coach’s reluctance to use Mainoo now reflects poorly in light of the youngster’s immediate impact.
“If we’re being honest, it’s very embarrassing for Amorim,” he added. “You’ve got a homegrown talent, close to leaving the club because he couldn’t get opportunities. Then he comes in and shows exactly what he’s capable of.”
Mainoo stood out against Spurs not only for his intelligent assist that set up Bryan Mbeumo’s opener but also for his assured display in central midfield alongside Casemiro. He dictated tempo, carried the ball confidently, and offered defensive stability — qualities United have sorely needed.
Carrick Calls for Patience
While praising Mainoo’s influence, Carrick urged restraint when it comes to expectations. The interim boss acknowledged the midfielder’s talent but stressed the importance of managing his development carefully.
“There’s no doubt about what Kobbie can offer,” Carrick said. “But he’s still very young. We have to be mindful of the pressure we put on him and the demands we place on his shoulders. Credit to him — he stepped back in and quickly found his rhythm, which isn’t easy after time out.”
Tensions between Mainoo and Amorim had become increasingly visible in the manager’s final weeks, even drawing public attention when the player’s brother wore a “Free Kobbie Mainoo” shirt at Old Trafford. Amorim consistently defended his selections, insisting he was simply choosing what he believed to be the strongest lineup.
Since Carrick’s appointment, however, Mainoo has featured in every minute of United’s last four matches, helping secure victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham while registering two assists.
With 18 months remaining on his current contract, United are now reportedly preparing to reopen talks over an extension. An agreement had previously been outlined last year but was never finalized before Amorim’s departure.
