Kenya’s Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego secured his place in the men’s javelin final with an emphatic first throw at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Yego, who has enjoyed a consistent season, carried his strong form into the global stage, hoping to add another chapter to his decorated career. Since making his debut at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, where he narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish, the 2015 world champion has never failed to reach a final.

He booked his slot in this year’s final by producing a huge 85.96m effort on his first attempt. Anderson Peters followed with 84.44m, while Rumesh Pathirage registered 82.44m to claim third in the early rounds. In the opening qualification group, Germany’s Julian Webber impressed by topping the list with 87.21m. Poland’s Dawid Wegner set a personal best of 85.67m to secure second place, as Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra also advanced with 84.85m.

Julius Yego’s 2025 Season Form

Yego began his season at the Doha Diamond League, where he finished sixth, before competing at the Kip Keino Classic on home soil, settling for fifth. He bounced back strongly with victories at the Motonet GP Lahti and the Paavo Nurmi Games, reminding the world of his sharp form.

Returning to the Diamond League in Paris, he again finished sixth before shining at the Kenyan Championships, where he claimed the national crown. He then impressed at the Neeraj Chopra Classic, bagging second place on the podium.

One of his season highlights came in Silesia, where he dominated with an 83.60m throw to clinch top spot. Yego later competed in Brussels and Zurich, both part of the Diamond League series, finishing fifth on both occasions.

With Tokyo’s final ahead, the Kenyan powerhouse aims to reclaim his place among the world’s elite.
