Karim Benzema has once again put the Saudi Pro League in the global spotlight after agreeing to a sensational switch from Al Ittihad to rivals Al Hilal, a move that has reportedly irritated Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr.
The dramatic transfer will see Benzema cross the city divide, transforming from a celebrated figure at Al Ittihad into a key weapon for the league’s current leaders. While the French striker’s departure was dressed up as amicable on social media, reports indicate his exit was driven by a bitter contractual dispute that ultimately forced his hand.
The former Real Madrid forward has ended his association with Al Ittihad, but his Saudi adventure is far from finished. Instead, Benzema is preparing for a new chapter with Al Hilal, where he is expected to play a central role under manager Simone Inzaghi as the club pushes to dominate both domestically and on the continental stage.
A Contentious Farewell
Benzema confirmed his exit via a message posted on X, striking a calm and respectful tone. “This chapter comes to an end, but respect will always remain,” he wrote. “I leave with my head held high and proud.”
Behind the scenes, however, the situation was reportedly far more strained. According to French outlet L’Équipe, negotiations over a contract extension collapsed after Al Ittihad presented terms that Benzema’s representatives viewed as unacceptable. The proposal allegedly involved the Ballon d’Or winner playing without a fixed salary, earning money only through image rights.
Those close to the striker described the offer as “humiliating,” believing it diminished Benzema’s status and contribution. The breakdown in talks quickly accelerated his decision to leave, despite his strong connection with the club and its supporters.
Legacy and a New Challenge
Benzema leaves Al Ittihad with an impressive return, having registered 54 goals and 17 assists in 83 appearances. His output averaged a goal contribution every 0.85 games, underlining his influence whenever he was fit and available.
With just six months remaining on his previous deal, his move represents a major boost for Al Hilal, who are already setting the pace in the title race. The transfer also sets up a fascinating new subplot in the league, reuniting Benzema with longtime teammate Cristiano Ronaldo—but this time as direct opponents.
Reports suggest the switch has not gone down well with Ronaldo, who has recently expressed frustration with the Saudi Arabia Investment Fund. The Al Nassr star is said to feel his club has been overlooked financially compared to rivals, even allegedly staging a brief strike in protest.
Now entering the twilight of his career, Benzema appears motivated by more than silverware. At Al Hilal, he will be chasing trophies, legacy, and the professional respect he believes slipped away during his final months at Al Ittihad.
