Keely Hodgkinson’s rivals might quietly welcome a season without a World Outdoor Championships or Olympic Games, especially after the British middle-distance star declared she is currently in the best form of her career following her world indoor 800m triumph.
The 24-year-old delivered a dominant display in Torun, Poland, on Sunday, controlling the race from the gun to the finish line. She stormed to victory in an impressive 1:55.30, setting a new championship record and recording the second-fastest indoor 800m time in history. Her performance came just weeks after she had already broken the world indoor record in the same event, further underlining her red-hot form.
With the indoor season now wrapped up, Hodgkinson is turning her focus to the outdoor campaign. She is expected to target major honours on home soil, including European and Commonwealth titles, before rounding off the season at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest later this year.
Her recent run of performances has also reignited discussions about whether she could challenge one of track and field’s longest-standing marks — the women’s outdoor 800m world record of 1:53.28 set by Jarmila Kratochvilova back in 1983.
Keely Hodgkinson Fires Warning to Competitors
Speaking after her breakthrough global victory, Hodgkinson admitted the moment carried deep personal significance.
“It feels amazing to finally win. This is my first world title,” she said, reflecting on her journey after her training partner Georgia Hunter Bell had earlier claimed gold in the women’s 1,500m.
“I’ve reached so many finals and gone in as a favourite before, but never managed to win. To finally get that gold, prove it to myself, and lift that weight off my shoulders — it means a lot.”
Despite already collecting 11 international medals, Hodgkinson had previously fallen just short at global outdoor championships, picking up two silvers and a bronze. This latest victory, however, signals a shift in mindset.
She made her intentions clear with a confident message to her rivals: “My focus this year is domination. When you know you’re in the best shape of your life, you don’t leave anything to chance. If anyone wants to beat me, they’ll have to earn it. I’m never going down without a fight.”
Hodgkinson also credited her training environment for her current level, highlighting the competitive edge she shares with Hunter Bell under coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows.
“Georgia and I push each other every single day in training. We’re both in incredible shape right now,” she said.
