Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed optimism about his team’s development, even after they suffered a narrow penalty shootout defeat to Estonia national football team in the FIFA Series. While the result may not have gone Kenya’s way, the performance offered encouraging signs of progress and resilience.
The international friendly, played on Friday, March 27, saw both teams battle intensely throughout the match before it was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. Estonia took an early lead in the first half when Tanel Tammik found the back of the net in the 20th minute, putting Kenya on the back foot. However, Harambee Stars responded strongly after the break, with Ryan Ogam scoring in the 51st minute to bring the game level.
From that point on, Kenya looked increasingly confident, creating multiple opportunities to take the lead. Despite their attacking efforts and improved control of the game, they were unable to find a decisive goal, and the match ended 1-1 after regulation time. The contest then moved to penalties, where Estonia edged Kenya 5-4 in a tense shootout.
McCarthy Encouraged by Team’s Growth and Mentality
Speaking after the match, McCarthy emphasized that the performance itself was more important than the final outcome. He noted that his players demonstrated discipline, composure, and a growing sense of maturity, especially in a closely fought encounter that tested their mental strength.
According to the coach, the team showed notable improvement in how they handled pressure situations. He pointed out that such progress is crucial as Kenya continues to build a competitive squad capable of performing consistently at the international level. McCarthy believes that the players are gradually developing the right mindset needed to compete against stronger and more experienced opponents.
He also acknowledged the quality of the opposition, highlighting that Estonia has recently faced top European sides. For him, competing on equal terms with such a team is a strong indicator that Harambee Stars are heading in the right direction. Despite Kenya’s status as a developing football nation, the performance suggested that the gap between them and more established teams is slowly narrowing.
McCarthy reiterated that his focus goes beyond short-term results. While victories are important, he stressed that long-term improvement and the establishment of a strong team identity remain his primary objectives. From his perspective, the ability of the players to remain composed and execute their game plan against a challenging opponent was a clear sign of positive development.
Slow Start Raises Concerns for Coach
Although there were plenty of positives to take from the match, McCarthy did not shy away from pointing out areas that still require improvement. He admitted that he was not entirely satisfied with how the team approached the first half, describing their start as lacking intensity and urgency.
In his assessment, the players struggled to assert themselves early in the game, allowing Estonia to dictate the tempo and take advantage of lapses in concentration. This slow beginning ultimately contributed to Kenya conceding the opening goal, which forced them to chase the game.
During halftime, McCarthy challenged his players to raise their performance levels. He urged them to move the ball more quickly, improve their positioning, and show greater desire in their play. His instructions focused on creating more space and stretching the opposition’s defense, especially as the match wore on and fatigue began to set in.
Improved Second-Half Display Shows Potential
The response from Harambee Stars in the second half was exactly what the coach had hoped for. The team returned with renewed energy and purpose, displaying better organization and sharper attacking play. Their improved movement and passing allowed them to gain control of the match and push Estonia onto the defensive.
This shift in momentum led to the equalizing goal by Ryan Ogam, which injected confidence into the squad. Kenya continued to press forward, creating several chances that could have secured victory before the final whistle. At one point, they came close to scoring, only for a last-ditch defensive effort to deny them a crucial goal.
McCarthy praised his players for their ability to adapt and respond positively to his tactical instructions. He noted that the second-half performance was a clear reflection of the team’s potential when they play with confidence and determination. However, he also emphasized the need for consistency, stressing that such intensity should be maintained throughout the entire match rather than only after halftime adjustments.
Penalty Shootout Frustration Continues
Despite their strong showing in open play, Harambee Stars once again fell short in a penalty shootout. McCarthy described penalties as unpredictable, acknowledging that luck often plays a significant role in determining the outcome. Nevertheless, he admitted that the team’s recent record in shootouts is an area of concern.
The coach referenced past experiences, including similar situations where Kenya has struggled from the spot. While he recognized the element of chance involved, he suggested that more work may be needed to improve the team’s confidence and execution during penalties.
Even so, McCarthy refused to dwell too much on the disappointment. Instead, he chose to focus on the positives, maintaining that the overall performance provided valuable lessons for the team moving forward.
Focus Shifts to Third-Place Play-Off
With the match against Estonia concluded, Harambee Stars are now turning their attention to their next fixture in the FIFA Series. They are set to face Grenada national football team in the third-place play-off scheduled for Monday, March 30. Grenada will be looking to bounce back after suffering a heavy defeat to Rwanda in their previous match.
For Kenya, the upcoming game presents another opportunity to build on their recent progress and secure a positive result. McCarthy and his technical bench are expected to address the shortcomings identified against Estonia while reinforcing the strengths displayed in the second half.
As the team prepares for this encounter, the focus remains on continued improvement, better execution, and maintaining consistency across all phases of play. While the loss to Estonia may have been disappointing, the overall performance has provided a solid foundation for future growth.
