Kenya’s football scene is set to gain from a new partnership with Senegal as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The two nations entered a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration in various sectors, with sports emerging as a key focus. President William Ruto welcomed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye to State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, where they discussed ways to deepen ties, particularly in football development.

President Ruto expressed optimism that Kenya could learn from Senegal’s remarkable football progress as the nation gears up for the continental showpiece.

“As Kenya prepares to co-host AFCON 2027, we value Senegal’s support and expertise in hosting and excelling in African football tournaments,” Ruto stated.

“We look forward to benefiting from Senegal’s experience in infrastructure, event organization, and building a lasting sports legacy.”

Senegal’s Football Success Inspires Kenya

Senegal has enjoyed extraordinary success across different football levels in recent years. The West African nation won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, followed by triumphs at the 2023 AFCON U-17 and U-20 tournaments, and the 2022 African Nations Championship. The Teranga Lions have also qualified for their third consecutive FIFA World Cup in 2026, cementing their place among Africa’s football powerhouses.

President Ruto highlighted the importance of leveraging Senegal’s achievements to improve Kenya’s football structures.

“We are keen on pursuing joint projects such as exchange programs for coaches and players, hosting regional tournaments together, and organizing joint training camps,” he noted.
“By merging Kenya’s strength in athletics with Senegal’s football excellence, we can empower our youth and promote cultural exchange.”

Kenya gained valuable experience when it hosted the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which exposed areas for improvement, including crowd management and ticketing. Officials hope that with Senegal’s guidance and shared experience, Kenya will refine its hosting capabilities in time for AFCON 2027.
