Organisers of the Kip Keino Classic have announced that the certification of the track at Nyayo National Stadium is progressing as planned, with final approval expected in the coming weeks ahead of the event.
Owen Malone, the Continental Tour events director at World Athletics, recently provided an update on the readiness of the facility as preparations continue for the April 24 competition.
As one of Kenya’s leading athletics meetings, preparations for the Kip Keino Classic are already in full swing. A major focus remains on ensuring that the track meets all required international standards, with organisers working against time to finalise certification before the event.
The newly laid tartan track at Nyayo National Stadium was completed in October 2025 as part of a large-scale upgrade project led by the Kenya Defence Forces. The renovation was aimed at preparing the venue for upcoming major tournaments, including the 2025 African Nations Championship and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Track Set to Receive Approval Within Weeks
Speaking to the media on March 26, Owen Malone noted that preparations for the Kip Keino Classic have been progressing smoothly, following several days of close collaboration with Sports Kenya and Athletics Kenya.
He explained that essential operational components such as competition logistics, timing systems, broadcasting arrangements, and overall event coordination have been carefully reviewed and refined to align with global standards.
According to Malone, the cooperation between stakeholders has been highly effective, with most critical areas already addressed well ahead of the event. This has placed organisers in a strong position as they move closer to the final stages of planning.
He highlighted that the preparation meetings had been productive, with a clear focus on ensuring all technical and organisational elements meet the expectations of an international athletics event.
Malone also pointed out that the certification process for the Nyayo Stadium track has made notable progress. A technical surveyor has already conducted detailed assessments to confirm that the facility complies with World Athletics standards, and early indications show that requirements are being met.
Nairobi Advantage Boosts Event Appeal
Malone expressed confidence that the certification process is on track and will be completed within the required timeframe. He noted that the initial measurement report will soon be submitted to World Athletics, after which approval could be granted within two to three weeks if all criteria are satisfied.
He also emphasised that Nairobi offers a unique advantage in attracting elite athletes, particularly sprinters. Many competitors are already familiar with the city’s conditions, making it an appealing destination on the global athletics calendar.
This advantage has helped the Kip Keino Classic continue to draw top-tier talent, reinforcing its reputation as one of Africa’s premier track and field events.
Top Kenyan Athletes Confirm Participation
Meanwhile, several high-profile athletes have already confirmed their participation in the 2026 edition of the Kip Keino Classic. Among them are Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, and 400m national record holder Mercy Oketch.
Their inclusion is expected to boost the event’s profile even further, drawing attention from both local and international audiences.
With preparations well underway and the track certification process nearing completion, organisers remain optimistic that everything will be in place for a successful and competitive edition of the Kip Keino Classic.
