Liverpool’s Premier League woes deepened as Brentford outplayed and outfought them to secure a fully deserved 3-2 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. The defeat marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive league loss, exposing once again their defensive vulnerabilities and lack of control.
Dango Ouattara and Kevin Schade put Brentford two goals ahead in the first half, before Milos Kerkez controversially pulled one back for Liverpool in added time. Igor Thiago’s composed penalty after the break restored Brentford’s two-goal cushion, and although Mohamed Salah’s late strike gave Liverpool hope, the hosts held firm to claim all three points.
This marks the first time Liverpool has lost four straight league matches since February 2021. Despite spending £446 million during the summer, defensive stability remains a major concern, with their last clean sheet coming on September 14 against Burnley. The Reds now sit sixth in the Premier League table, behind the likes of Sunderland and Manchester United, and four points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who face Crystal Palace on Sunday.
How Brentford Outclassed Liverpool
Brentford made an explosive start, breaking the deadlock within five minutes. Michael Kayode’s long throw was flicked on by Kristoffer Ajer, allowing Ouattara to adjust quickly and finish smartly at the back post.
Liverpool’s best chance of the opening period came when Florian Wirtz fired narrowly wide from close range, still searching for his first goal for the club. Brentford, however, remained the more composed and organized side. Jordan Henderson, facing his former team, and Ouattara both went close before Giorgi Marmardashvili denied Mikkel Damsgaard’s powerful effort from distance.
The home side doubled their lead before halftime following a quick counterattack. After Liverpool’s appeals for a penalty were waved away, Hugo Ekitike lost possession in midfield. Damsgaard seized the moment, threading a perfect pass to Schade, who beat Ibrahim Konate and coolly slotted past the goalkeeper.
Controversy struck just before the interval when Milos Kerkez pulled one back for Liverpool deep into stoppage time, sparking fury among Brentford fans. Referee Simon Hooper was replaced at halftime by Tim Robinson, who later awarded Brentford a penalty after a VAR check confirmed Virgil van Dijk’s foul on Ouattara. Thiago calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-1.
Arne Slot introduced Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson, and Federico Chiesa in search of a comeback, but Brentford continued to dominate, with Ouattara missing a golden header. Salah’s late volley that clipped the underside of the crossbar gave Liverpool a lifeline, but Brentford’s resilience saw them through to a memorable win.
