Virgil van Dijk delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Liverpool edged Atletico Madrid 3-2 at Anfield in a heated Champions League clash.
Remarkably, Arne Slot’s side has now sealed victory with goals scored in the 83rd minute or later in each of their last five matches. Frustrations boiled over for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who was sent off after a heated confrontation with a supporter in the closing moments.
While much of the attention was on Alexander Isak making his Liverpool debut, it was one of Anfield’s most experienced players who first made the difference. Andy Robertson diverted Mohamed Salah’s early free-kick into the net, giving Liverpool an unexpected lead. Just minutes later, Salah found the net himself, putting the Reds 2-0 ahead inside six minutes. The rapid start left Simeone furious on the touchline as Anfield fans relished glimpses of promising link-up play between newcomers Isak and Florian Wirtz.
Atletico, however, found a lifeline just before the break. Marcos Llorente poked home a scrappy goal in stoppage time of the first half, cutting Liverpool’s lead and renewing the visitors’ belief. The second half saw Liverpool continue to create chances, with Salah striking the inside of the post after a neat buildup involving Wirtz. Atletico’s resilience paid off again when Llorente grabbed his second with a deflected effort, drawing comparisons to his double that knocked Liverpool out of the same competition back in 2020.
That match also ended 3-2, but in Atletico’s favor. This time, Liverpool demonstrated their new knack for late drama. In recent weeks, Federico Chiesa netted a late winner against Bournemouth, Rio Ngumoha provided the decisive goal at Newcastle, Dominik Szoboszlai struck against Arsenal, and Salah’s penalty sank Burnley. Against Atletico, it was Van Dijk’s towering header that sealed a fifth consecutive dramatic victory and the perfect start to their European campaign.
Slot Pleased with Isak’s Debut
Liverpool boss Arne Slot shared his thoughts on Alexander Isak’s performance after the match:
“I was pleasantly surprised with how sharp he looked for the 60 minutes he played. It shows the difference when you sign a 25-year-old with top-level experience compared to a younger player still adjusting to the demands.
“I expected the quality, but it’s always good to see a new signing hit the ground running. It’s a strong start, but just 60 minutes. And before David [Moyes] asks, no, he won’t be playing 90 minutes against Everton.”
Player of the Match: Virgil van Dijk
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher praised Van Dijk on CBS, placing him among the club’s all-time greats:
“I don’t like to limit Van Dijk by just calling him the best center-back. At Liverpool, plenty of players are remembered as legends for winning titles. But there’s another level I call ‘giants of the club’ players like Gerrard, Dalglish, Hansen, Barnes, Souness, and Salah. Van Dijk belongs in that group.
“He’s not at the bottom of the list, I can tell you that. He will be remembered not just as one of the best defenders, but as one of the greatest players ever to represent Liverpool.”
Simeone: “He Insulted Me”
Simeone’s dismissal came after an altercation with a supporter behind the Atletico bench. Stewards intervened, but referee Maurizio Mariani ultimately sent the Argentine coach off.
“When they scored their third goal, a supporter turned around and insulted me. I’m a human being too,” Simeone explained afterward.
Pressed in the post-match press conference to clarify, he refused to elaborate. “I’m not going to go into the exact words. I know what happened behind the bench. I can’t fix society’s problems in one press conference. I have to live with it, it happens all the time.”
UEFA will review the referee’s report before deciding on any disciplinary action for Simeone’s red card.
