Real Madrid have reportedly entered the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, a player who has also attracted interest from Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester City.
Reports suggest that representatives from the Spanish giants were present during Newcastle’s FA Cup clash against Manchester City on Saturday. Although their main objective was to assess an upcoming Champions League opponent, the scouts were also believed to be keeping a close eye on the Italian international.
The presence of Madrid officials signals that the club could now compete with Arsenal and Manchester City in the battle for the 25-year-old midfielder. Tonali is currently valued at around £100 million, and interest from several top clubs could make him one of the most talked-about names in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Newcastle United, however, are determined to hold on to their key players. The club already sanctioned the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool last year for a British-record £130 million, and they are keen to avoid another major departure. That said, their stance could become more complicated if they fail to secure European football for next season.
Tonali ‘Happy’ at Newcastle Despite Madrid Links
Despite the growing speculation surrounding his future, sources close to Tonali suggest he is not actively looking to leave St James’ Park. His family is believed to have settled comfortably in the North East of England, particularly following the birth of his son earlier this year in January.
His agent, Giuseppe Riso, previously addressed the rumours surrounding a possible move. While he played down talk of an imminent transfer, he also hinted that Tonali’s true market value would become clearer in March, a comment that some interpreted as a suggestion that his price tag could rise.
The midfielder signed a long-term contract with Newcastle that runs until 2030 and reportedly earns around £150,000 per week. The club showed strong support for Tonali during a difficult period early in his time in England, standing by him throughout a ten-month suspension related to betting offences shortly after his £55 million move from AC Milan in 2023. Because of that backing, Tonali is believed to have developed a strong relationship with manager Eddie Howe.
Even so, the possibility of joining a club like Real Madrid could still be appealing. The chance to become part of the Spanish club’s famous “Galactico” lineup might prove difficult to ignore for any player. If Madrid were to submit a serious offer and Tonali indicated an interest in the move, Newcastle might prefer to resolve the situation quickly rather than allow a lengthy transfer saga similar to the one that surrounded Isak’s departure.
Italian Midfielder Linked With Long-Term Contract
When questioned in November about his long-term future at Newcastle, Tonali admitted that football careers can be unpredictable and that players often have to take things one season at a time.
“This is a tough question because, you know, in football you need to think year by year,” he explained at the time. “If an opportunity comes in your life for another club, you have to consider everything carefully. I don’t want to say I’ll stay here for ten years, but at the moment I’m happy here and I’m not thinking about any other team.”
After Newcastle’s recent 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup — a match where Harvey Barnes scored first before Savinho and Omar Marmoush turned the game around — City manager Pep Guardiola was seen chatting with Tonali on the pitch after the final whistle.
Interestingly, it was not the first time the pair had been spotted speaking together. They were also seen in conversation following Manchester City’s 5-1 aggregate victory over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-final earlier in the season, further fuelling speculation about the midfielder’s future.
