Manchester United have confirmed that Harry Maguire has committed his future to the club by signing a fresh contract, ensuring he remains part of the squad beyond the current season. The new agreement runs for one year, with an option for the club to extend it by a further 12 months.
Maguire’s previous deal was due to expire this summer, which would have allowed him to leave on a free transfer. However, both parties reached an agreement after several weeks of negotiations. A key aspect of the new terms is a notable reduction in his salary.
Previously earning around £180,000 per week, the England international has accepted a revised wage believed to fall between £100,000 and £120,000 weekly. The move highlights his willingness to stay at Old Trafford and continue contributing to the team’s long-term plans.
Maguire Delighted to Continue Old Trafford Journey
Since arriving from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-record £80 million fee for a defender, Maguire has experienced mixed fortunes. However, he has recently regained importance within the squad, particularly under interim manager Michael Carrick.
At 33, the centre-back has provided stability and leadership in defence, especially during injury setbacks to key players such as Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez. His experience has played a role in helping the team remain competitive in the race for Champions League qualification.
Speaking after signing the extension, Maguire expressed his pride in representing the club. He described playing for Manchester United as a great honour and emphasized his excitement about continuing his journey with the team. He also pointed to the ambition within the squad and shared optimism about achieving success in the near future.
Experience and Leadership Remain Key Factors
The decision to extend Maguire’s contract was not solely based on his on-field performances. The club is also mindful of maintaining experienced figures within the dressing room, particularly with Casemiro expected to depart.
Manchester United view Maguire as a valuable presence who brings leadership and professionalism to a relatively young squad. His influence off the pitch is considered just as important as his contributions during matches.
Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, praised the defender’s mentality and commitment. He highlighted Maguire’s resilience and described him as a player who embodies the standards required to represent Manchester United.
Role in Squad and Future Plans
The renewed deal appears to benefit both the player and the club. Maguire had previously turned down opportunities to leave, including a £30 million move to West Ham in 2023, along with interest from AC Milan and Saudi side Al Qadsiah earlier this year.
His decision to remain in Manchester is also influenced by personal factors, with his family settled in the area. For the club, keeping Maguire ensures continuity and provides a mentor for emerging defenders such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
With his future now secured for up to two more years, Manchester United can shift attention to strengthening other areas of the squad. Midfield reinforcements and improvements on the left flank are expected to be priorities in the upcoming transfer window, as the club continues its rebuilding process.
