A sensational first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde powered Real Madrid to an emphatic 3-0 win over Manchester City, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side facing an uphill battle to keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive.
Despite missing several key players, including Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, Madrid produced a ruthless display in the opening half at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Valverde delivered the standout performance of the night, dismantling City’s defence with three clinical finishes before the interval.
Valverde Takes Control With First-Half Masterclass
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball over the defence, catching Nico O’Reilly off guard. Valverde brought the pass down with impressive control, instantly putting himself in a one-on-one situation with Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The City goalkeeper rushed out in an attempt to close down the angle, but Valverde kept his composure. He rounded Donnarumma and calmly slid the ball home from a tight angle to give the Spanish giants the lead in the 20th minute.
The goal arrived slightly against the run of play, as City had begun the match with intensity and looked comfortable on the ball. However, once Madrid went ahead, the momentum quickly shifted.
Just seven minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage. Vinicius Junior flicked a clever pass into space behind the City backline, and Valverde timed his run perfectly. The Uruguayan midfielder raced through on goal and finished confidently past Donnarumma for his second of the evening.
City suddenly found themselves chasing the game, while Madrid appeared energized and confident.
Hat-Trick Hero Completes Dream Night
Valverde’s dominance continued as the first half approached its conclusion. With three minutes remaining before the break, he completed a remarkable hat-trick in style.
The midfielder displayed superb technique inside the penalty area, cushioning the ball with a brilliant first touch before knocking it beyond defender Marc Guehi. Donnarumma rushed forward once again, hoping to deny him, but Valverde reacted quickly and fired a precise shot past the Italian goalkeeper.
The strike sealed the first hat-trick of Valverde’s professional career and sent the Bernabeu crowd into celebration as Madrid went into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Donnarumma Prevents Further Damage After the Break
Following Madrid’s devastating first-half display, the outlook for City’s European ambitions darkened considerably. Betting odds for the Premier League champions to win the competition drifted dramatically after the interval.
To their credit, City attempted to respond after the restart, but they nearly fell further behind within minutes. Donnarumma had to react sharply to keep out a low strike from Brahim Diaz, preventing Madrid from extending their lead.
The goalkeeper later had a chance to redeem himself after conceding the early goals. When he brought down Vinicius Junior inside the penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot. However, Donnarumma recovered well by saving the Brazilian’s poorly taken penalty, offering City a brief moment of hope.
Despite that lifeline, Madrid still looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Courtois Stands Firm as City Struggle to Respond
While City tried to regain some control, they ran into an inspired performance from Courtois at the other end of the pitch.
The Belgian goalkeeper produced a brilliant reaction save when O’Reilly’s improvised tackle-shot threatened to sneak under the crossbar. Courtois extended his leg just in time to divert the ball over the bar, ensuring Madrid maintained their comfortable advantage.
City pushed forward in search of a goal that might revive their chances ahead of the return leg, but they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against Madrid’s organised defence.
With the second leg set to take place at the Etihad Stadium next week, Guardiola’s side now face the daunting task of overturning a three-goal deficit.
Guardiola Admits City Face a Huge Challenge
After the match, Guardiola acknowledged that the result had left his team with a difficult challenge in the return fixture, though he insisted they would not give up.
The City manager admitted the defeat was hard to accept and pointed out that the opening goal came from poor defending. He also highlighted the quality Madrid possessed, particularly in Valverde’s performance, which made the night even more difficult for his team.
Guardiola suggested the scoreline could have been worse and said the focus now shifts to recovery and preparation for the upcoming matches, including a domestic fixture before the return leg.
Although he recognised that the chances of a comeback were slim, the Spaniard insisted his players would continue fighting and look for ways to improve their attacking threat.
Bernardo Silva Calls Defeat a Tough Lesson
City midfielder Bernardo Silva also reflected on the disappointing night, admitting it was a frustrating result for the team.
He explained that City had started the match well and felt comfortable in the early stages. However, once Madrid scored the opening goal, the team struggled to maintain control of the game.
According to Silva, the players lost their grip on key aspects such as transitions and second balls, which allowed Madrid to exploit the spaces and punish them.
The Portuguese midfielder admitted the situation feels difficult at the moment, particularly because the team failed to find the back of the net.
Still, Silva insisted the tie is not completely over. In football, momentum can change quickly, and he believes City must analyse what went wrong before heading into the second leg with renewed belief.
For now, though, Madrid hold a commanding advantage after a night that belonged entirely to Valverde.
