Manchester United have already begun preparations for the upcoming campaign, identifying at least four high-profile additions they believe could help the club mount a serious title challenge in the 2026–27 season.
Club officials are preparing for a busy transfer window as they look to reshape key areas of the squad. Plans currently focus on bringing in up to four players who can reinforce multiple positions and give the new manager a stronger platform for success.
Strengthening the midfield is viewed as the most urgent priority. United intend to sign two central midfielders to offset the confirmed departure of Casemiro at the end of the current season.
Alongside midfield reinforcements, the club is also considering recruiting a left-sided attacking player. Meanwhile, the possibility of adding another central defender is being explored as uncertainty continues to surround the future of Harry Maguire. Talks remain ongoing over a potential contract extension for the defender, whose current deal expires in June.
The departure of Casemiro will leave a considerable gap in the middle of the pitch. The Brazilian midfielder, now 34, revealed in January that he intends to leave Old Trafford when the season concludes. His exit would leave Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte as the only specialist central midfield options currently in the squad.
Because of that situation, club decision-makers have agreed that at least two midfield additions are required to restore balance and depth in the centre of the park.
Midfield Recruitment Tops United’s Transfer Wishlist
United’s recruitment team has been closely monitoring several standout performers in the Premier League.
Among the players attracting interest is Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United. The Italian international has impressed since returning to regular action and is believed to be one of the names on United’s shortlist.
Other midfielders being considered include Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, Carlos Baleba at Brighton & Hove Albion, and Alex Scott who plays for AFC Bournemouth.
Wharton, 22, is believed to be open to joining a club competing in the UEFA Champions League. With United currently sitting third in the league standings, qualification for Europe’s top competition appears within reach.
A move for Anderson may be more complicated. The 23-year-old midfielder has also attracted strong interest from Manchester City, who are reportedly leading the race for his signature. United may also be reluctant to meet the salary package expected by the England international.
Baleba had previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford, though his inconsistent campaign at Brighton may have caused United to reconsider their level of interest. Meanwhile, Scott has impressed with his consistent performances for Bournemouth and recently earned a call-up to the England squad selected by Thomas Tuchel.
Despite supporters chanting “One more year, Casemiro” after the midfielder scored against Aston Villa, interim manager Michael Carrick made it clear that the player’s departure has already been decided.
Carrick Confirms Casemiro Exit Plan
Carrick acknowledged the impact Casemiro has had at the club but indicated that the decision regarding his exit will not change.
“The fact that the decision has been made actually simplifies things a bit because everyone understands the situation,” Carrick explained. “His contribution has been fantastic since arriving.”
The former United midfielder added that replacing a player like Casemiro does not necessarily mean finding someone with the exact same qualities.
“Players move on, and that’s part of football,” Carrick said. “You don’t always replace someone like for like. Sometimes you take the team in a slightly different direction.”
He also emphasised the importance of balancing the squad in several areas.
“You have to look at what the group needs overall — on the pitch, in the dressing room, leadership and tactical balance,” Carrick continued. “Case has been excellent to work with and has done a lot of positive things during his time here.”
Defensive Concerns Prompt Possible Reinforcements
Another area under evaluation is the defensive line, where the future of Harry Maguire could shape the club’s plans.
The £80 million defender has played regularly under Carrick, appearing in all nine matches since the interim coach took charge. His recent form could even see him return to the England setup after an absence of more than 18 months.
However, United’s heavy investment in centre-backs in recent years has not fully solved the club’s defensive issues due to frequent injuries.
Lisandro Martinez, now in his fourth season at the club, has managed just 106 appearances and is currently sidelined again with a calf problem. The Argentine has missed around 90 games in total due to various injuries.
Similarly, Matthijs de Ligt has been unavailable since late November because of a back injury.
United are also reviewing options on the left side of the team. Since shifting to a system featuring a back four with natural wingers, the squad lacks a specialist left-sided attacker.
Matheus Cunha has occasionally filled that role, but the club may prefer to recruit a more natural option. Another possibility is converting Patrick Dorgu into a permanent winger and bringing in a new left-back instead.
Current left-back Luke Shaw will enter the final year of his contract next season. Although he has started all 30 league matches this campaign, concerns remain about whether the 30-year-old can cope with the demands of a longer schedule if United return to European competition.
For that reason, club officials are already evaluating long-term solutions for the position as they prepare for what could be a crucial rebuilding summer.
