Manchester United have reportedly shortlisted two familiar faces as they continue their search for an interim head coach following the exit of Ruben Amorim. The club is said to be weighing up former players who already have managerial experience at Old Trafford, with the aim of steadying the team for the remainder of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have emerged as the leading candidates for the temporary position. Both men are club legends and understand the expectations that come with leading Manchester United. According to reports, each has already held initial talks with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. However, the club is believed to be holding off on making a final decision until in-person meetings take place with both contenders.
Darren Fletcher, who will take charge of the upcoming league fixture against Burnley, is also being considered, though he remains a less likely option at this stage. Meanwhile, former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is no longer part of the discussion for the interim role.
Solskjaer, a hugely popular figure among supporters, is seen as a strong option for a potential return to the dugout. The Norwegian previously stepped in as interim manager in December 2018 following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho. His impressive start in that role earned him the permanent job, which he held for close to three years, making his familiarity with the club’s pressures a major advantage.
Face-to-Face Meetings Planned With Solskjaer and Carrick
Interestingly, Carrick once found himself in a similar situation after Solskjaer was relieved of his duties in November 2021. The former England midfielder oversaw the team for three matches as caretaker manager before a permanent appointment was made. Now aged forty-four, Carrick is currently available after leaving Middlesbrough in June and is understood to be firmly on United’s shortlist.
All four individuals linked with the interim role: Solskjaer, Carrick, Fletcher, and Van Nistelrooy share a common bond, having all played under Sir Alex Ferguson. The legendary former manager, who recently marked his eighty-fourth birthday, was reportedly present at the Carrington training complex on Tuesday, where he met with senior club officials, adding further intrigue to the decision-making process.
With Van Nistelrooy ruled out, Fletcher will have an opportunity to demonstrate his credentials when he leads the side at Turf Moor. The former midfielder described the chance to manage the first team as something he never imagined possible. However, he made it clear that conversations about his future would be postponed until after the match.
“I’ve had a conversation and the focus was on this game,” Fletcher said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “There’s a lot to do in a short space of time, from training to speaking with the players. Everything has been geared toward the Burnley match, and we’ll talk again afterward.”
Fletcher Addresses Expectations and Immediate Focus
For the Burnley clash, Fletcher will be assisted by Under-21s coaches Travis Binnion and Alan Wright, with experienced defender Jonny Evans also joining the coaching setup. Fletcher avoided giving away tactical details, choosing not to confirm whether he would continue with the back-three system favored by Amorim.
Before agreeing to step into the caretaker role, Fletcher revealed that he reached out to Sir Alex Ferguson for guidance and approval. He emphasized the importance of showing respect to his former manager before making such a significant decision.
“I don’t really make big decisions without speaking to Sir Alex,” Fletcher explained. “He was actually the first person I called. I wanted his blessing, to be honest. He deserves that level of respect.”
Fletcher also shared that he had attempted to contact Amorim following his departure, though he had yet to speak with him. He spoke warmly of their relationship, highlighting Amorim’s positive influence on both a professional and personal level.
“I’ve tried to reach him,” Fletcher said. “I’d really like to speak to him because we had a good relationship. He was great with me, and he’s also the manager who gave my son his debut. As a father, I have a lot to thank him for.”
As Manchester United weigh their options, the club appears focused on finding a steady hand to guide the team through the remainder of the campaign.
