Nairobi United’s debut campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup will come to an end at the group stage following their narrow loss to Azam FC on Sunday, a result that also denies the club a major financial boost.
The Kenyan side’s elimination was confirmed with two matches still left to play after they fell 1-0 to the Tanzanian outfit in Dar es Salaam. The defeat meant Nairobi United could no longer mathematically qualify for the quarter-finals, ending what had been a historic continental journey.
The Salim Ali-coached side went into matchday four knowing that only a win would keep their slim qualification hopes alive. Nairobi United had managed just one point from their opening three games, earned in a 1-1 draw against Congolese side Maniema Union, leaving them under pressure heading into the decisive clash.
Earlier on Sunday, Maniema Union stunned Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club in the early kickoff. That result saw both Maniema and Wydad move to nine points, effectively shutting the door on Nairobi United and Azam, who both needed victory to remain in contention for the knockout stages.
Azam rose to the occasion, while Nairobi United were left ruing missed opportunities.
How Much Will Naibos Miss
An early goal from Azam midfielder Feisal Salum, popularly known as Fei Toto, proved decisive and was enough to sink the Kenyan side. With two remaining fixtures against Wydad and Maniema Union, Nairobi United can now only amass a maximum of seven points, which is insufficient to reach the quarter-finals.
The elimination brings significant financial consequences. By qualifying for the group stage, Nairobi United had already pocketed $400,000 (approximately Ksh51.9 million), a major achievement for the club. However, failing to progress means they will miss out on an additional $550,000 (about Ksh71.4 million) that CAF awards to each of the eight teams that advance to the Confederation Cup quarter-finals.
That money would have been a huge boost to the club’s coffers, but Nairobi United struggled to match the experience and quality of more established continental sides. Still, their run provided valuable exposure and lessons.
For a team featuring in continental football during their debut season in the top flight, the experience will be viewed as a foundation to build on, with hopes of returning stronger in future campaigns.
