John Obi Mikel Explains How ‘Good Coach’ Benni McCarthy Can Build a Strong Harambee Stars

Nigeria and Chelsea great John Obi Mikel has shared his thoughts on what Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy should prioritise if he is to lay a solid foundation for the future of Kenyan football.

The former Chelsea midfielder has encouraged McCarthy to place strong emphasis on nurturing young talent as he works to strengthen the national team. According to Mikel, overlooking grassroots and academy players would be a missed opportunity for a country rich in raw football potential.

Mikel, who rose to prominence at a young age after developing his game at Plateau United in Nigeria, understands the importance of early exposure and proper guidance. His breakout moment came at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup, where he captained Nigeria to the final, eventually losing to an Argentina side inspired by a young Lionel Messi. That tournament proved to be a launchpad for his illustrious career at both club and international level.

Having walked the same developmental path, Mikel believes Kenya can reap similar rewards by investing in youth structures. He feels that McCarthy, given his experience and pedigree, is well placed to identify and guide promising players into the senior setup.

Mikel Impressed by Young Kenyan Talent

While visiting Kenya, Mikel had the chance to interact with young players during a football clinic held in Nairobi. He admitted to being impressed by the quality and enthusiasm on display, suggesting the future looks bright for Kenyan football if the right steps are taken.

“From the talent I saw here today, there’s no doubt the senior team will have quality players to choose from,” Mikel said. “Benni is going to have a strong team, and I wish him all the best as he continues his work.”

The two-time Premier League winner also praised Kenya’s growing presence on the continental stage, noting that tournaments are always more exciting when the Harambee Stars are involved.

“I wish the Kenyan national team continued growth and development. It’s always great to see Kenya competing because it makes the tournament enjoyable to watch,” he added.

Praise for McCarthy and a Call to Focus on Academies

Mikel spoke highly of McCarthy, describing him as both a good person and a capable coach who can raise standards within Kenyan football. However, he stressed that success should not be measured only by the performance of the senior team.

“I know Benni is a good guy and a good coach, and I truly wish him success,” Mikel said. “But I hope he also spends time watching kids in the academies because young players are always the future.”

According to the former Super Eagles captain, the next global superstar could easily emerge from Kenyan academies if the right systems are put in place. “The next Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or even another John Obi Mikel could come from here one day,” he noted.

Mikel is currently in Kenya to promote his Obi One Podcast, where he is set to record an episode with former Harambee Stars captain McDonald Mariga. The two share a unique bond, having both played under legendary coach Jose Mourinho and winning the UEFA Champions League during their careers.

Their visit highlights the growing attention Kenyan football is receiving and reinforces the belief that with the right focus on youth development, the Harambee Stars can build a formidable future.
