Ferdinand Omanyala Records Eighth-Place Finish in His Second Race of the 2026 Season

Ferdinand Omanyala finished eighth at the Miramas Indoor Meet as he continues to fine-tune his preparations ahead of the 2026 athletics season.

Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, found the going tough at the Elite Indoor Track Miramas Meeting, where he settled for an eighth-place finish in the men’s 60m final. The Kenyan sprinter is still adjusting to a revised competition strategy as he builds toward peak form later in the year.

Omanyala showed promise in the heats, where he placed third to book a spot in the final. However, the final proved more demanding, and he was unable to challenge for the podium, crossing the line in 6.86 seconds.

France’s Jesus Orphee Topize claimed victory in the final with a winning time of 6.70 seconds. Japan’s Shushei Tada followed closely in second place after clocking 6.73 seconds, while Botswana’s Tsebo Matsoso completed the podium in third with a time of 6.75 seconds.

Ferdinand Omanyala Changing His Season Approach

Speaking in an earlier interview, Omanyala revealed that he intends to tackle the 2026 season differently, placing greater emphasis on indoor competitions to sharpen his speed and race execution before transitioning to the outdoor circuit.

After enduring a difficult 2025 campaign, which he openly described as a season filled with “painful lessons,” the Commonwealth Games champion has shifted his focus toward technical improvements and building a strong fitness base early in the year.

A key element of this renewed plan is his reunion with former coach Duncan Ayiemba. The partnership is aimed at helping Omanyala rediscover the form that once propelled him to a historic African record of 9.77 seconds in the 100m.

Despite recent results, the sprinter remains confident about his direction, viewing the current season as an opportunity to reset and reassert himself among the world’s elite.

Outlining his motivation for the year, Omanyala said, “This year is all about getting back to the top. It is a season of restoration because I am going to restore everything I lost.”

He added that the indoor circuit will play a major role in his long-term plans, noting that missing previous indoor tours affected his rhythm. As a result, he is now targeting both indoor events and the Diamond League moving forward.

Earlier this season, Omanyala opened his campaign at the Meeting de Paris Indoor, where he finished fourth in his 60m heat and narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
