President William Ruto has brushed aside critics while voicing strong confidence in the rapid progress of Talanta Sports City as Kenya intensifies preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Head of State recently shared footage of himself touring the expansive construction site, inspecting key sections of the stadium and interacting with engineers. His visit signalled satisfaction with both the quality of workmanship and the speed at which the project is advancing.
Ruto pointed out that when the stadium was first announced, many sceptics questioned whether it would meet expectations. Now, with the structure visibly taking shape, he says the transformation speaks louder than the early criticism.
According to the President, the development stands as proof that patience and trust in the process can yield tangible results. He expressed optimism that once complete, Talanta Sports City will not only meet international standards but also deliver a thrilling experience for athletes, supporters, and event organisers.
“They were busy nursing doubts. We trusted the process. Now look, see for yourselves. Talanta Stadium is right here. Hii ni noma sana, mtapenda,” Ruto remarked, underscoring his belief that the final product will win over even the harshest critics.
Talanta Sports City Progress Ahead of AFCON 2027
Construction of the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City has surpassed the 80 percent completion mark as of February 2026. Situated at the historic Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road, the ultra-modern complex is being accelerated to position Kenya as a ready host for AFCON 2027.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya reaffirmed confidence in the timelines, noting that the progress demonstrates Kenya’s preparedness—together with its PAMOJA partner nations—to stage a successful continental tournament aligned with President Ruto’s broader vision.
The stadium has been purpose-built for football and rugby, deliberately excluding a running track to create a closer, more electrifying connection between fans and the pitch.
Financed through a KSh 44.7 billion infrastructure bond, the project also features three dedicated training grounds, premium hospitality suites, and integrated rail connectivity designed to streamline fan movement on match days.
Major structural works are projected to conclude by March 2026, marking one of Kenya’s most ambitious sports infrastructure undertakings since the 1980s.
