Igor Tudor’s decision to hand Antonin Kinsky a surprise start ahead of Guglielmo Vicario in Tottenham’s Champions League round-of-16 clash against Atletico Madrid proved disastrous, as Spurs suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat in the first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper was given the nod despite having made only two appearances this season, both coming in the EFL Cup. It was his first outing in the UEFA Champions League, and the night quickly turned into a nightmare for both the player and his team.
Early Goalkeeping Errors Leave Spurs in Crisis
From the opening minutes, Tottenham found themselves in serious trouble. Kinsky’s difficult evening began just six minutes into the match when a poorly executed clearance fell straight to Marcos Llorente, who calmly finished to put Atletico ahead.
The mistake set the tone for a disastrous opening spell that left Spurs reeling. Within minutes, Atletico extended their lead, piling pressure on a Tottenham side that struggled to settle defensively.
Things went from bad to worse when Kinsky slipped while attempting to move the ball across his penalty area. The mishap allowed Julian Alvarez to capitalise and guide the ball into the net for Atletico’s third goal, leaving Tottenham three goals down inside 17 minutes.
Swift Substitution Adds to the Drama
With the situation rapidly spiralling out of control, Tudor made the unusual decision to substitute his goalkeeper before the match had even reached the 20-minute mark. Kinsky was withdrawn and replaced by Guglielmo Vicario.
The young keeper headed straight down the tunnel, accompanied by members of the Tottenham staff, while Tudor remained still on the touchline without acknowledging him.
Vicario’s introduction did little to stem Atletico’s momentum. His first action was to deal with a dangerous corner, but the rebound eventually fell to Robin Le Normand, whose header crossed the line despite desperate attempts by Tottenham defenders to clear it. Goal-line technology confirmed the fourth goal.
Tottenham Show Brief Attacking Promise
Despite the defensive chaos, Tottenham showed flashes of quality going forward. They managed to pull a goal back before halftime through a well-worked move.
Richarlison drove into the penalty area and picked out Pedro Porro, who controlled the ball cleverly before firing past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
However, Spurs were fortunate to avoid further problems before the break. Defender Micky van de Ven lunged into a high challenge on David Hancko that could easily have resulted in a red card. The referee dismissed Atletico’s appeals, and a VAR check ultimately allowed the defender to stay on the pitch.
Atletico Strike Again in the Second Half
The second half began at a calmer pace but still delivered moments of excitement.
Shortly after Jan Oblak produced an impressive save to deny Richarlison’s powerful header, Atletico launched a rapid counterattack. The move ended with Alvarez finishing confidently past Vicario to make it 5-1.
Even Oblak was not immune from mistakes on an unpredictable night. A misplaced back pass from the Atletico goalkeeper was intercepted by Porro, who quickly set up Dominic Solanke to score Tottenham’s second goal late in the game.
The strike offered Spurs a small consolation, but the final whistle confirmed they still face a daunting three-goal deficit ahead of the return leg in north London.
Tudor Defends His Controversial Selection
After the match, Tudor attempted to explain his decision to start Kinsky ahead of Vicario. The Tottenham coach suggested the move had been made with both the player and the team’s current struggles in mind.
He admitted that the early substitution was extremely unusual in his managerial career, describing it as a necessary step to protect the team and the young goalkeeper after the difficult start.
Tudor insisted that, prior to kickoff, he believed selecting Kinsky had been the correct decision. According to the coach, the pressure surrounding Vicario and the team’s fragile confidence played a role in the choice.
While he acknowledged that the mistakes occurred on a big stage, Tudor maintained that Kinsky remains a talented goalkeeper with a promising future.
Questions Continue Over Tudor’s Position
The defeat adds to a growing list of concerns surrounding Tudor’s brief tenure at Tottenham. Since taking charge less than a month ago, the Croatian coach has overseen several disappointing results.
When asked whether he felt he was the right person for the job, Tudor declined to offer a clear answer, repeating his earlier stance of giving no comment on the matter.
Instead, he focused on the difficulties currently affecting the team, noting that setbacks seem to occur in almost every match. Despite this, he emphasised that the players remain committed and eager to improve.
Looking ahead to Tottenham’s upcoming clash against Liverpool FC in the Premier League, Tudor said his priority is simply to continue working and doing what is expected from a coach during a challenging period.
Concern Among Players and Growing Pressure
The night’s events also appeared to have an emotional impact on the players. Observers noted several teammates attempting to comfort Kinsky as he left the field, reflecting concern about how the young goalkeeper handled the situation.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea also weighed in on social media, drawing attention to the harsh nature of the moment.
Footage circulating after the match suggested that Tottenham defender Cristian Romero may have urged the coaching staff to make the substitution earlier, though Tudor later dismissed suggestions that the player had influenced the decision.
The heavy defeat has intensified scrutiny around Tottenham’s direction under Tudor. Instead of providing a bounce after his arrival, the team’s performances appear to have deteriorated further.
With a demanding schedule ahead and the second leg still to come, pressure is mounting on the manager to steady the team quickly before the situation worsens.
